My big rod (6/7 wt Guideline Pro) has an uplocking reel seat, and over
time I've noticed that the horn in the reel sits deeper and deeper in the top ring, making the locking ring have to reach farther and farther up to lock down the reel. Its at the point now where I'm right at the ends of the threads in the seat. It doesn't look like anything is sliding around...just that the horns on the reel are settling deeper and deeper up in the seat. What could be causing this, and how do I repair it? I've thought of wrapping tape around the horns on the reel, or looking for an extra long set of horns to screw onto the reel, or adding another 'spacer ring' above the locking ring, but these don't seem like the proper solution. --riverman |

This might prove too much adjusment, but it's an idea. -- Bill Grey |

In article l, Hans

Just adjust it under the horn of the reel and cut to shapwith a razorblade (mind you fingers). Hans van der Stroom "W. D. Grey" schreef in bericht ... Sometimes on larger rods they use slightly larger reel seats to accommodate larger reels. Manufacturers have not standardized reel feet or reel seats. If the reel feet on your reel are tapered from narrow at the tips to wider at the center where attached to the reel just grind a little bit of the tips off. You'll be getting a wider reel foot to bite into the hoods. Otherwise you are going to need a new reel seat. You can put some electricians tape on the bottom of the reel foot and trim
it off with a razor blade. Try one thickness at a time till it fits right. Some years back the fly fishing reel feet and fly rod reel seats where set to an industry standard. It use to be worse. Years ago we asked people to bring in their rod or reel if they wanted to purchase either to be sure they fit together. -- Bill Kiene Kiene's Fly Shop Sacramento, CA, USA Web site: www.kiene.com "riverman" wrote in message ps.com... Some years back the fly fishing reel feet and fly rod reel seats where set to an industry standard. These used to fit better, and both the rod and reel were purchased within the past 6 years so they should be up to whatever the 'standard' is. I can easily figure out a way to accommodate it, but I'm really wondering what would make it deteriorate. If I put tape or a spacer on the reel or rod without figuring out the cause, the problem will just get worse. I can imagine the entire handle falling off on a cast one day unless I find out whats going on. --riverman |

Hi RM
You can put multiple layers of electricians tape under the foot of the reel till you are happy with the look of things. -- Bill Kiene Kiene's Fly Shop Sacramento, CA, USA toll free USA 1-800-400-0359 Web site: www.kiene.com "riverman" wrote in message ps.com... On some reel seats the upper reel foot holder begins to move further up the reel seat after a while. I have never heard of one actually falling off, but it makes it more and more difficult to secure the reel properly. Secondly, the reel foot holders are tapered. Screwing the reel in tight every time, widens the tapers, and one is obliged to tighten even more the next time, etc. Eventually the tapers are so widened out, that they do not hold the reel foot at all, and it is merely held by the force applied by the up-locking screw-ring. This is also easily seen, if the tapers are widened ( which is almost certainly your problem), then the reel will "wobble" from side to side, right up until the final tightening of the screw, which however, basically only locks the tips of the reel feet. If you use tape or similar to try and help this problem, donīt put it UNDER the reel feet, as this merely exacerbates the problem. For a semi-permanent and easy fix, put a coat of epoxy on the TOP SIDES of your reel feet. Also, use less force when locking your reel in future. The only other solution is to change the reel seat.
