Frank, or anyone else who knows--

was saying the finest rainbow fishing in the U.S. is in the Sand Hills
of Nebraska.

Izzat so?

I expect that the person you were talking to is on crack or some other
fine substance. In northern Nebraska, there is one, count 'em, ONE
stream with trout. It is highly dependent on stocking and its a about
a 75/25 shot on rainbows over browns. They average about 13".

As we all know, Nebraskans are pretty much full of it and the guy at the table
certainly was. There's a lot of good fishing in Sandhill lakes but almost zip
for trout fishing. There are a few trout around. A classmate of my wife's at
Valentine used to hold the state record for Browns and he caught the fish below
the dam at Merrit reservior I believe. The largest bass I ever caught was in a
ranch pond about 50 miles south of Valentine close to where my wife grew up.

I have a good friend ( we were hunting buddies many years before he moved
away ) that lives in Nebraska now. He has tried to lure me there to visit
with tales of big Bows taken on a fly from some LAKE there .... maybe that
accounts for the reports?

Regardless, I'm more likely to make the trip to visit him with the excuse
being to goose/duck/pheasant hunt

Hollar when you go, I'll tag along. I need to catch some bait for the
big crappies out here.

Friend of mine told me a story about another friend of his who once caught a
goose. Broke both his wrists.

who can only imagine what might have happened if the damned thing had still
been alive at the time.

Frank, Just kidding. I lived in NE for 35 years before moving to Wyoming and
married a wonderful Nebraska girl.
