Can anyone give me a summary of the relationship between the X system
of tippets, and the breaking strength? My Mongolia connection recommends using a 10-12 pound tippet, but I'm not at all sure what size that is. I'm vaguely aware that the material and diameter will play a significant role, and I also know that I can just read it on the spool, but my gear is buried kinda deep in the shed and its dark out there.... :-o --riverman |

That sounds like my backing, not my leader. I don't think I've ever SEEN tippet that big...what kind of monsters ARE these taimen??! --riverman (Suddenly my 9ft 7wt rod looks like a pea shooter....) |

I've landed trout over 10 pounds on 5x. The exceptions would be if I'm fishing in heavy current, or in lots of tippet-breaking submerged wood, or if I'm using large flies. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

My standard trout tippet is 4X Orvis SuperStrong at 6 lb. test. I rarely use anything else and then only when necessary. My bass leaders taper to 0X, also Orvis SuperStrong and that's 15.5 lb. test. I'll also use Orvis Mirage fluorocarbon in 0X and that's listed at 12 lb. test. -- Ken Fortenberry |

I've tried leaders, and notice no difference. 'Course, that could be a problem with the shooter, not the rifle, so to speak. --Dan |

Taimen paterns include muskrat, otter and various water foul imatations. |
