Got a late start,, something about my wife not waking me up this
morning, She said Oh I forgot, yeah right. Went to Walker County lake, a state lake, 60 acres, that they sell 22,000 daily fishing permits a year (Heavily fished for such a small lake) they stock cat fish in it, and sometimes blue gills, but they have never stocked bass or crappie. 50% of the bass fishermen are catch and eat, so this lake has a good supply of LARGE bass in it. They average 6 or more 10 +'s a year "out" of it. So far this year a 12 lber came "out" of it. I left late, so I left the boat at home (major mistake today) The decent bass had already moved out from the shore by the time I got there. I talked to a few bank bassers, who told me of numerous large fish they had seen up to an hour before I arrived, but only one 3 lber was taken. Water temp was 85 degrees, 3 1/2 foot visibility Near Blue Bird day Wind was light but we had some strong gust from no where about every ten min. or so. About 30 bank fishermen, some had a few early morning cat fish on stringers, very few gills caught, and only that one 3 pound bass. I started with that new Storm Rattle Wildeye Split Tail . I practiced a few min. wiggling it where I could watch the lure, I drew a small crowd just watching the lure do it's thing. It took a few min to get the rod tip action just right, to get the best fish catching action from it, but it was Awesome. This will be a killer lure wiggled I spent the next hour walking the bank and working the lure , I did not even get a nibble, You can't catch fish when they are not there, even if it's the best presentation in the world. Although many of the bank fishermen were fishing for blue gills with crickets and worms, nothing was being caught, I decided to try wiggling with my tiny worm, no decent bass around, so why not. I switched to my 9 1/2 ft St Croix steel head rod and 4# line. I put a #10 True Turn long shank on it, a 1/8 inch by 2 1/2 inch purple worm, then tied on a Wiggle Rig. First cast I caught a 5 inch large mouth. I ended up catching a dozen more large mouths up to about 10 inches, and somewhere around 30 blue gills (most under eating size) over the next two hours, no one else caught a single fish during this time with their worms and crickets. No doubt about it, all of the decent fish where either in deeper water, or suspended in deeper water. I could only cast to a water depth of around 6 feet. Last week at the same time I was catching many decent fish this late in the day from the bank. I either have to get there earlier, or take the boat -- Rodney Long SpecTastic tackle company http://spectastictackle.com/ |
