Here's the link to story in todays ORegonian.

http://oregonlive.com/news/oregonian...6894223300.xml

The real story is to many farmers farmed land where there is not
enough water to support the farming. The farmers demanded more water
from klamath Lake. The water in the lake is vital to the Klamath
Sucker, a fish important to the culture of the Klamath Tribe.
Of course it's all non political, but the farmers are republicans and
the indians democrats ( if they vote at all).

Yeah, News travels slowly here by talking drum. They didn't have the word
for 'Salmon'..

Umm, actually by this time of day, I have absolutely no idea where I
stumbled across the news report. But I did, I skimmed it, thought it was
recent news and noticed '33000 Salmon killed' and wondered what was the
story. I guess the actual story is that the government just ruled that low
releases was a major contributing factor, and now everyone is scrapping over
that. But its ulrimately somewhat old news...

Uh, did it have any effect on the next year's run? (sheepish effort)

riverman,
The kill was in the Klamath river where it runs through California. It wont
effect next year's run because the smolt's from one years spawn go to the
ocean for three years. It will however effect the run in three years. A
small part of the run will return in four years which is natures way of
preventing the total destruction of a years run.

It's the other way around, isn't it ? Four-year spawners
from the 2001, 2005, 2009, etc years will spill over into the
destroyed year's slot to help restore its size over time, no ?

Yes
