Excellent Bob,
enjoyed the picture show, the one called "Early Start" is
priceless. I'm looking forward to possibly doing the float this year.

It's a great float. Water levels can be dissappointingly low as early
as late June. Below 250cfs don't go at all. At 250cfs canoes
only (light enough to drag). 350cfs or more ok
for rafts. 450cfs or more is ok for driftboats. I think those
are the guidelines (on the FWS website).

Long ago I knew a Bozeman area sheetrocker, painter/taper
who made that trip solo every year, without a shuttle.
He'd spend 3 days going down river to the last campground.
Then he turned around, with rope over shoulder, and waded all
the way back up, dragging his canoe. That leg took close to a
week. That had to be before the designated campground rules they
impose now.

Interesting return leg, 59 miles he would have to wade back upstream?

There are several EXCELLENT rivers in central MT away from the "crowds"
of the Missoula and Yellowstone areas. Most are tribs of the MO, and I
can think of four others that run into the Yellowstone that don't get
nearly the pressure you see on the Madison, Bitterroot etc. A little
research and a few hours driving from Billings can turn into solitude
and monster browns. Watch for rattlesnakes and ticks, and make sure to
bring big streamers and hoppers.
