Default DS2 For My Dad

Christmas is approaching, and this is the time of year when we say
'cherish the times' because we never know when it might be the last
Christmas, especially with the older folks. So my dad has expressed an
interest in learning how to fly fish. He's an old bait caster and I'm
sure he wants to learn to fly fish as a way of bonding with his only
child (me). And I view it as a way of bonding with an 80 year old WW II
veteran who is still doing pretty good for his age. He's spry for his
age and I know we could fish together (maybe even successfully). So
would a 9' 5 wt. DS2 be good for him to cast optimally when we go out
next spring? We're in Massachusetts. We fish the Millers and Deerfield
Rivers.

Buy him a casting lesson first, before you buy any tackle at all. A good pro
will also have a range of rods to try. Then you will know which is best for
your dad, and he will be able to use it as well.

Well, "optimally" may take a couple of outings g, but yes.

good god. surely you must understand that simply standing with your
father by a stream, watching the water flow, and talking about things you
never had the time to cover in the years past, would far surpass any
technical queries. still, an 8'4weight will do just fine.

I'd think about getting him an ultralight spinning outfit. Then show him how
to use your fly rod if he wants. You and he can switch rods occasionally
and he'll probably enjoy it a lot more. The comradeship you'll achieve that
way will be superior.

....well...so... how was it standing in a blind in the oz-land flyway,
taking shots at ducks? ...or was it standing blind while drinking shots
in oz? ..or ducking shots...well, you know... do tell.

You know, you could have mail-ordered that case of flu and saved travel
expenses. Hope the hunting was worth it.
