What a hoot a Jindal - Palin ticket in '12 would be. Talk
about an entertaining train wreck, it would be absolutely hilarious. Kind of a Marx Brothers farcical comedy set in a deep south trailer park. LOL ! Jindal's rebuttal last night was so absurd to the point of incredulity. Here's what the *conservative GOP* commentator David Brooks had to say: LEHRER: How well did he do? BROOKS: Not so well. You know, I think Bobby Jindal is a very promising politician, and I opposed the stimulus package - I thought it was poorly drafted - but to come up at this moment in history with a stale, "government is the problem...we can't trust the government"...it's just a disaster for the Republican Party. The country is in a panic, now. They may not like the way the Congress passed the stimulus bill. The idea that government is going to have no role in this...in a moment where only the Federal government is big enough to do stuff...to just ignore all that and say government's the problem...corruption, earmarks, wasteful spending - it's just a form of nihilism. It's just not where the country is, it's not where the future of the country is. There's an intra-Republican debate: some people say the Republican party lost its way because it got too moderate, some people say they got too weird or too conservative. He thinks they got too moderate, and he's making that case. I think it's insane. I think it's a disaster for the party. I just think it's unfortunate right now. Insane nihilism, yeah that sounds about right. I pity the poor folks of Louisiana who have this silly goofus for a governor and living in Illinois I know a thing or two about goofus governors. -- Ken Fortenberry |

Still, Jindal got thrown to the wolves by his own party last night. He's not as dim as that presentation came off, as noted by Brooks. It will be interesting to see how he fares at dealing with an upcoming budget shortfall in his home state, and the idea of some of the Palin wing cozying up to an Indian-American Catholic seems dubious, at best. First, my guess is that Jindal is about as silly as the ideas he presents. It wasn't just that smirking look of his; it was the ideas he presented in the face of the national and world situation. His IDEAS show that at best he is willing to look like a fool, to impress the milling malignant base of his party. It was like a public self mutilation by an Ottoman functionary. Second, as much as I am amazed at the clownishness of the Palinites, I don't think the ethnic/religious stuff is as big a deal in lots of the country, as it might be back East, the Midwest, and some of the South. My impression is that mixed race, cross ethnic and mixed religion families/situations/etc., are more common in the West and Alaska and the Pacific. I can think of only a minority of families I know that do not have at least one of these crosses going on if I think about it, including my own extended family. And I have always understood that Louisiana has a long history of significant mulattoes, and its own special way of tolerating all kinds of mixes. If anything, I think Jindal's "hybrid" affect could be a big plus. Dave |

As much as I enjoy the schadenfreude of the GOP searching so desperately for their next standard bearer, that was one of the most god-awful rebuttal speeces I've ever seen, both in style and substance. Inasmuch as it's the first time I've taken a serious look at Jindal, the direct comparison to President Obama's confidence, gravitas, style, and oratory couldn't have been more striking, and probably left an unfortunate first impression on many. He seemed so far out of his league I almost felt sorry for him. Frankly, I was most troubled by his enthusiastic willingness to outright lie to the nation in his first big national spotlight. More than a bit disturbing to me. He has 2.5 years, maybe 3 to polish that act if he's going to make a serious run at POTUS, but he has a long way to go if that was any indication. He needs style, substance, integrity, and better speech writers and fact checkers. So yeah, Jindal/Palin '12 sounds good to me. |

If Jindal is, as described, "the best and brightest of the young Republicans", it looks like I'll be voting for Obama again in 2012. |

I don't follow the rising stars in the GOP, so I don't know if the hype over Jindal is justified or lipstick on a pig (to coin a phrase). His speech Tuesday was poorly conceived and not terribly well presented; but nothing about it gave me the impression that Jindal was necessarily unintelligent. Kinda goofy and obviously willing to sell talking points in lieu of actual facts, but not stupid. I kept remarking to SWMBO, "Wow, this guy is awful;" but at least he's on the radar screen. (Jeez, I can't believe we're even speculating about '12 already, but I don't see Palin even lasting past breakfast in the primaries.) Joe F. |

I saw him with one of the talking heads on Sunday morning, and I couldn't believe that he was being touted as candidate in 2012. Just spewing the same tired policies that haven't worked. As to his being a Rhodes Scholar...all that thar book learnin' don't always translate into street smarts. |
