Default Yellowstone- Gardiner Entrance

We (a friend and I) are headed down to Yellowstone in September and I was
going to go thru the Gardiner MT entrance as I have already been on the
Idaho side
Fortunately we have not had severe drought conditions
So the fish are not stressed - otherwise we would not go
(with my fingers tightly crossed) - We have not had a severe fire season.

Can anyone help w suggestions for campgrounds or other notable spots to see
and fish
I am taking my truck w a camper top and possibly my fishing dog - April a 7
mo old standard poodle.
I don't care if we camp in or near the Park

Any help or siggestions are greatly appreciated in advance.

Fred,

If you already haven't done so, you might try asking about Yellowstone in
rec.outdoors.rv-travel. There are folks in there that are very familiar
with Yellowstone.

I know that one guy stays the summer at http://www.mtrv.com/ Another used
to work at Fishing Bridge Campground.

check the road closures before you make any big plans. IIRC the road
to West yellowstone along the Gibbon will be closed. If you're
planning on fishing around West Yellowstone at all, it may be an
adventure just getting there from Gardiner.

Second that.

In Sep, '96, we got run out of the park on the 18th (if memory serves)
because of excessive snow and NORMAL shut down of facilities. Only
one campground was open 'till the end of the month, and then it
closed.

cheers

There is a very nice campground on Henry's Fork at Island Park. It was
clave headquarters for a Western Clave held a few years ago. You'd be
right on the river. I believe it is state run. An easy haul to West
Yellowstone, but the Gardiner entrance would be a ways to drive. The
camp ground accepts campers and tenters. Nice place, but a steep walk
down to the river.

BTW, there are people who haunt this place, certain confirmed axxholes,
who will tell you that there are no hatches on HF or in the park in
September. I would guess all the hatches we saw, caddis and
mahoganies, were just apparitions. Great fishing in September. And,
no crowds.
