Cabela's now carries Winston fly rods. That's like saying
WalMart now carries Waterford crystal. What in the hell is going on ? Closer examination reveals that not all Winstons are listed, the WT for example, is not listed in the Cabela's catalog. But even closer examination reveals that the WT is available from Winston themselves only as a special order. WTF ? Since when ? For those who don't know the WT is the successor to the venerable and classic Winston IM6. The Winston IM6 is, in my never humble opinion, the very finest 3 weight graphite fly rod ever manufactured. As I recall there was a changing of the guard at Winston a while back. Sounds like Winston is on a downhill trajectory. Maybe it's just the rotten economy and a temporary thing. I hope so. -- Ken Fortenberry |

Matter of fact, Winston put off shipping their new stuff to their traditional dealers while they stocked Cabelas. It's been a topic of debate for some time on the Winston forum Winston has taken a decidedly different operating track the last few years. While the businessman in me understands it given the continued decline in the number of independent fly shops, the traditionalist in me sure hates to see Winston further strain their dealers by favoring Cabela's but at the end they forgot to call me and ask for my advice : ( |

You see every Thursday the New York Times devotes a section of the newspaper to style. I'd say ten or twelve pages of the Times every week is more than just a little scrutiny. LOL !! LOL indeed! The word snobbery comes to mind, especially in the NYT Style section. Each to their own, of course. Tom |

How could the world continue to exist without such 'style'? Tom p.s. actually, a foray into fly-fishing would be a step up for the Times. I just hope not to witness same..... |

I repeat, without intensely close and constant scrutiny, style does not exist. g. i mean, ****, even the doughboy figured this one out. ![]() |
