Default goodbye, columbus

well, i just don't think i can take this place on a regular basis any
longer. the level of vitriol began increasing this fall, and the most
recent political threads have simply pushed it over the top. it is a sad
thing, in my view, to watch folks whom i have observed in perfectly pleasant
real life interaction become bitter enemies with the tap of a "send" button.
hardly anyone seems immune from either attacking or being attacked, and the
closer we get to elections, the worse it will get.
i just will be damned if i will lose a friend over disagreements about
politics, philosophy, or religion; or, for that matter, one's preferences in
photographic media.
visiting this place has become tantamount to watching endless replays of
ali-frazier in manila, and i never was much for blood sports between
friends.
i hope you will all email from time to time, if something
nonconfrontational arises that you think might be of interest to me. and,
of course, i will find it impossible not to lurk on a more or less random
basis, hoping against hope that things will become less draconian around
here. truth is, i am not optimistic; after all, r.o.f.f is nothing, if not
darwinian.

Would you mind ever so much if, from time to time, I sent you some
digital photos? :-)

What did I miss? I haven't been reviewing posts over the last couple of
weeks.

Seemingly so, but all is not as it seems.

Wayno shared with me:

i think that you might just do a little more lurking to get a sense of the
various personalities around here, before you take someone on, or encourage
a ****ing match. there are some very, very bright folks on this board. i
learn from them every day. i'm sure that we would be just fine on a stream.
but that has nothing at all to do with r.o.f.f. ken fortenberry is one of my
favorite fishing partners in reality; however, on roff, he is insufferable.
same goes for wolfgang. be cautious, and observe usenet rules, and you will
do just fine.

Jeez, you were kind enough to give me sound advice and you aren't practicing
it...so much for role models in America. (Not sarcastic, serious)

can we really tell the inflection in electronic posts?

I was originally surprised at some of the responses to my posts but enjoyed
the challenge...and as you are learning (tremendously in my case) to relax
and enjoy a conversation, to duck and run for cover (though the parents of
my students can cause this as well), and stand up and have confidence in my
abilitities to accept others.

Honestly, I correspond here because there's a lot to be learned from you ol'
mutha ****a's.

Are you really ready to leave it to people like me? I just learned what
top-posting is for cracker's sake.

Too bad you didn't take his advice. What you've just done is
one of the most egregious of the "cyber-crimes". You posted
a private email to a public forum. This is NEVER, EVER OK.
The email that Wayno sends to you is Wayno's and unless you
have his permission to post it in a public forum you've just
**** in your hat. I have yanked accounts from University of
Illinois students for this infraction, effectively kicking
them out of school for a semester, it is that serious.

collection of bedtime stories for kids who are too sensitive for "goodnight,
moon".

you are the dumbest single sonofabitch i have ever seen on usenet.
