Default Shad- Deer Creek, Maryland

I new it would be early but I went to Deer Creek Saturday morning.
Started fishing in the rain. I caught none but the people who were
there, at the mouth of Deer Creek at dawn, caught about a dozen.
There were about 6 poeple fishing. I saw a few being caught. Still
early for shad and Deer Creek. I spoke to another guy who said he had
done pretty well on the river near the dam earlier in the week.
Just FYI.

PS. Went to Deer Creek (about 10AM) where they stock it a caught few
nice trout on buggers. It was opening day in Maryland.

the shad run in nc is past the mid-point now, and the rock are starting
up. most of the roanoke shad have moved up near weldon....it's fish in
a barrel up there, and chock full of "sportsmen" too. folks are
reporting a fish on almost every cast. i spent a few hours downriver on
the roanoke near a place called palmyra (northeastern nc ghost town) on
friday... caught lots of big shad, largest i've experienced...but the
concentration of fish was definitely up river where they get stymied by
a dam. anyone in driving distance ought to experience the roanoke shad
carnivale at weldon at least once (that was enough for me)...

They showed up her on the Rappahannock a few days ago. A couple caught this
morning but the main body has yet to arrive. White Perch doing well and a
few Herring. Tough choice because the mountain trout streams are perking up
and fishing very well.

Thanks Gene. I was starting to think about heading up there myself; but
figured a couple weeks from now would be the start. Mebbe I'll jump the gun
this week & see what happens.

Oh yeah. The first day put-and-take opens on Deer Creek is a good day to
stay away. :-)

What's a big shad in those parts? 4-5 lbs?

nc state record, caught this year near pitch kettle creek, is just over
4 pounds. we were catching solid 2-3 pounders.
