You can't shoot rice in those things unless you cook it and wrap it in foil
or paper. "riverman" wrote in message ... http://tinyurl.com/2mvom This is right near Mike Connor's place. :-) --riverman |

A utility in the Northwest I use to consult with had a guy who used potato guns to shoot lines accross roads. They technique is to get a string accross a road, pull a larger adn larger rope until you got one big enough line to pull a 477 mcm ACSR cable over I405. Potato guns was one of several ways, there was model airplanes and arrows among others. |

This reminded me of an old post on r.o.f., so I dug it up: From: William Ivey ) Subject: Long Casting This is the only article in this thread View: Original Format Newsgroups: rec.outdoors.fishing Date: 1992-10-02 04:51:26 PST A week ago, I was at Cape Hatteras, NC, and drove out to the Point to check out the fishing activity. Things were slow, an occasional blue and puppy drum. However, there was a gentleman there with a contraption that can only be described as a cannon for casting/launching his bait. It consisted of an approximately 9' metal tube with an inside diameter of about 3 inches. One end of this was attached to a 2 cubit foot cannister w/pressure gauge. A hose was attached to the cannister leading to a CO2 tank. The barrel was angled about 45 degrees pointing out to sea. Also attached to the barrel was a rod holder which holds the rod at the same angle as the barrel. His bait consisted of all terminal tackle and cut mullet frozen into a cylinder of ice the same diameter as the barrel. To cast/launch, he packed the bait in the barrel using a ram-rod, just like a real cannon, placed the rod in the holder, opened the bail, closed a valve at the intersection of the barrel and cannister, opened the valve between the cannister and the CO2 tank, built the pressure in the cannister to approximately 80psi(I think), closed the valve, then fired by opening the first valve. The result was a whoosh of air, maybe like a mortar launch although I've never witnessed one in person, rapid removal of line from the reel, and a splash approximately 300 yards out. He was experimenting with using fresh bait, by just freezing in ice his terminal tackle minus hooks, and attaching the fresh cut mullet w/hook to the leader. However, the result was the terminal tackle going about 300 yards and the mullet going about 100. I didn't get his name, but Fran at Fran and Frank's in Avon said he had been tinkering with his contraption for a while. I believe he lives out there, so he will no doubt be around through the season. |
