Looking to buy a pair of waders and can only get 1 - so my question is ....
What kind? Will be Stocking Foot (I already have shoes) My feeling is breathables would be better as they are well suited for warm Summer weather and One could wear layers underneath if going out in colder weather, whereas Neoprenes while good for Spring/Fall might be a little too much in the Summer. Any thoughts??? Thanks. LV |

You are correct, sir. In fact neoprenes are way too much for the summer. I use a pair of fleece wading pants worn over a pair of light thermal longjohns along with thermal socks under my breathables, and stay warm and comfy in 38 degree water, and this setup is still more comfortable than the tight fitting, restrictive neoprenes. SNIP The breathables are by far the best choice for you. You may find that the shoes you have donīt fit very well. Depends on what breathables you buy.You need good fitting, but not tight shoes, or you will get cold feet. A trifle looser fitting is better than too tight. This article is interesting, and worth considreing, depending on where you will be wading; http://www.waywardflyfishing.com/articleShoes.htm I have tried this, ( although I bought some cheap trekking shoes new, three sizes too big) and it works very well. Neoprenes are restrictive, too warm in the summer, ( you sweat like a pig if you have to walk anywhere!), and you can easily get cold in them in winter too, even if you only sweat a little. TL MC |

I'd go with breathables. Just make sure that before winter comes, you buy
some really good fleece pants.. Simms is very proud of theirs; Redington has a pair for about half of Simms. I thought that I would never wear breathables during the winter, but now I do. Re neoprenes. We wet wade when it gets too hot to wear waders. Just get some neoprene socks to fill your boots, and wear old short or jeans. By the way, it can get too hot for breathables too! -- --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Are you still wasting your time with spam?... There is a solution!" Asadi added my name to the Subject:
john You rang ? ;-) I wade wet most of the time. I wear a pair of silk socks, a pair of SmartWool hiking socks, Simms neoprene bootie/gravel guards and a pair of quick dry nylon long pants or shorts, depending. The rule of Ken states thusly, thou shalt not get thy balls wet. Works for me. On the very rare occasion (way cold) that I do wear waders I have a very old pair of nylon lightweights that I wear over layers of poly-pro and wool. So to the original author of this thread, my opinion is to go with the breathables if you feel you have to have waders. -- Ken Fortenberry |

And the best part (IMHO) is that you can drive to the river, hop out of the car, slip into your breathables and go fishing. After you are done, you just slip off the waders and you're dressed to travel. Meanwhile, your neoprene-clad friends are hopping around the tailgate on one foot, shivering in the cold, yelling "hey, wait up!!" --riverman |

the one advantage of neoprenes over breathables is safety. Properly fitted
neoprenes with a belt trap little air and will allow little water into the wader. Breathable design is no different than the old rubber style waders which could cause an angler to float head down or fill with water making recovering from deep water difficult I also think neoprenes are a better choice for winter fishing and for use in a float tube.. Neoprenes can be had for much less $ than breahables meaning you could possibly afford a pair of both. Given breathables use neoprene feet one pair of wading shoes should fit both pairs if you consider this when making the purchase. -- there are no numbers in my email addy.
