One day a couple of years ago, PETA members came down to the fishing
pier with a biased questionaire about sportfishing. (Do you think fishing is a violent blood sport? y/n) I made the mistake of assuming that one could have a rational dialogue with these people. "What's better," I said. "Catching fish when you want to eat them, or buying fish from a supermarket where commercial boats net whole schools, thus removing them from the environment?" "We don't believe people should eat meat," the guy answered. A non-answer, really, he was just parroting the party line without giving it any thought whatsoever. I can get behind supporting humane treatment for domestic animals. The meat industry, if left to its own devices, would focus only on economics. But the goal of convincing people to convert to a vegetarian diet is totally unrealistic! The very idea of grilled tofu offends me. Actually, tofu offends me regardless, fermented soy bean curd, yugh! Have you ever seen a healthy looking vegetarian? One of the guy's arguments I can agree with. Anglers too often leave crap behind, like fishing line which can entangle birds. But to say that we ALL do that invalidates the argument. I don't. I leave nothing behind when I'm done fishing. Neither do my friends. I've been to PETA's website. Behind all the environmental concerns they display, there's a covert goal to transform all us omnivores into vegetarians. Ain't gonna happen! Pork ribs are just too tasty! barbz |
