Just managed to get some more sea tackle after my shed was burgled last
year. Please could someone tell me how the fishing is from Great Yarmouth to
Aldeburgh at the moment?

The male peeler crab is well past its middle stage, but with this weather
should last a while longer. If you want to freeze any now is the time to buy
them for the best quality baits. Don't forget although we may be a bit more
expensive, our crabs are ready to peel now not next week, unless of course
you ask for them to be like that.

The bass time proper is nearly here and we have an even better than last
year, collection of lures, jellies, feathers and assorted goodies for this
type of fishing.

We will be updating our specials page over the next few weeks, so keep
checking the following link.

THAMES TO HUMBER REPORT
Marks of the river Thames have in recent years have more from up river
marks. Well I spoke to a local trawler man the other day and he told me that
the river is full of small flounders. It seems that these fish just head
straight up the centre of the river these days.

The roker population is very strong this year, with heaps of nets out there,
there have still been some good catches of roker from various marks. The
river Crouch appears to have plenty well up river as has the Thames with
fish from the beach as far up as Tilbury, which is very unusual. Reports
also suggest an early mackerel invasion from the Thames like last year.

Southend boats have had some good roker catches with some eels, dogfish,
small bass and pouting. Large amounts of the former of these fish have been
reported from the river Medway. One angler reported several smoothounds from
a couple of marks but most below the 6lb mark. Southend pier where an angler
landed ten mackerel and six garfish in a session the other day, spells for
another possible good season. Steve Hagger has landed an excellent roker of
18lb from the Tidechaser. It was landed on a Daiwa TDU 410 and a Penn965
using a flowing trace with herring for bait. Plenty of roker from within the
Crouch boundaries with fish to be caught from almost anywhere from the
shore, but Fambridge being the best bet with squid and or herring.

Boats out from the river Blackwater marks have found roker to double
figures, some smoothounds and dogfish. However skipper Dave Weaving took one
of his famed long distance wreck trips with a good end result. Six anglers
from Tiptree in Essex, drifted over a wreck with some boats from Ostend with
little result. They then anchored over another wreck, fished with squid
baits and landed 26 cod to 18lb with the best being caught by Gerry
Playgrove. Brothers Frank and Vince Hardcastle got in on the act on their
first wrecking trip with five fish each. The smallest fish caught was 5lbs
with the average being 8/9lbs, to book a trip with Dave ring him on 01206
735699.

Dave Brown, manager and star of Breakaways, informs us of lots of fish, from
many marks, mainly on rag and crab baits. A match at Orford was won with a
superb top weight of 25lb. Main fish being caught from there are soles,
eels, dogfish, roker, codling and bass fished with rag and crab on two hook
droppers using size 1/0 hooks, at around 80 yards. More info an be pried out
of Dave on a good day on 01473 741393. Jason Amies from Gorleston Angling
freshly back from his hols, tells me of fishing being very steady, with
prospects looking good. A flush of cod from the boats, with one boat with 10
fish around just under the double figure mark and another with 8 fish to 8lb
all caught from within a mile form the shore. A 6lb bass from Eccles beach
has been reported with Hopton beaches producing some codling and bass to
2lb. Give Jason a call on 01493 662448 to let him know the latest catches.

Ade Cooper won the latest Humber AAS club match with five flounders for
112cm, winning by a close margin of 1cm over Gary Hutson who also had five
flounders. Best fish fell to Ian Beech with a 30cm flounder. Most of the
fish caught were flounders and the match was fished at Barton. The Yellow
Cross at Immingham is still worth a try for codling to 4lb and some pin
whiting. Cleethorpes Prom has some small flounders and bass to keep the rod
tips going. Humberstone Creek is abundant with crabs feeding on your worm
baits, best chance of fish will to use the peeler crab which an excellent
anyway, but its tougher for the crabs to take of, so therefore lasting
longer for the fish to find it. Reports on how the fishing is going can be
obtained from Bob Tarvet at Cleethorpes Angling.

TOP TIP
When tying knots on fishing line, it is most important to keep the line
moist when pulling the knot tight. Even heavy line will need this, although
obviously more important on thinner line. The reason is that it creates
friction and therefore heat as you pull the knot tight. Another tip I heard
about is to use lypsyl, the gel used for chapped lips.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Clacton Pier

CURRENT FORM

Plenty of fish being caught, although more dogfish, small bass and pouting
than most other fish. Expect bass, eels and soles to become more common.

BAIT

Lug or rag the main baits but try tipping with squid to give that added
bonus.

TACKLE AND TACTICS

At the moment most of the fish seem to be coming from the first 50 yards of
the allowed fishing from the pier. Use a two hook rig with small hooks, even
down to a size 6. Remember this is fun fishing with a chance of some better
fish. More dogfish from the end of the pier. Standard beach tackle will be
more than adequate from here, as you have to lift the fish up onto the pier.
A drop net is always a good purchase.

LOCATION

Clacton lies to the east of Colchester. Take the A133 or A120 from the A12
at Colchester. Then follow the A133 all the way to the sea front at Clacton.
Park up and walk onto the pier, where a small charge have to be paid.

Fished Lowestoft North Beach last night flood down.
Several Dabs & Pout Whiting only 20m from the shore, further out there was
too much weed.
Pleased to be back on the beach.
