The family gave me a Okuma CN 45L multiplier reel for my birthday 2 month
ago - The clutch seems to work fine, checking by setting for slipping against a weight but I can only wind in a weight in the region of about 2lb else it just locks the winding mechanism. - Its had about 7 hours use in two boat trips and despite following the advice of gentle washing in fresh water and a light spray of oil the star drag has started to peel badly. It looks like the star drag is made of plastic with a coating of silver paper though the rest of the reel looks ok. - The manufacturers website in Taiwan is in their language and the UK destributor (Svendsen-Sports) doesn't list a telephone number though I did email them at lunchtime. - Anybody have any advice? - Glad I didn't get any of the ling the chap next to me got yesterday, up to about 14lb and a bag of roughly 120lb in 4 hours. I was struggling with small cod and cuithes. - Mick |

Next time you go fishing lower the reel slowly into the sea and let go.
Then get a proper reel from Abu or Daiwa. Cheers Gordon. "Mike" wrote in message ... I had a look at the specs for the reel it looks like a surf/bait casting reel judging by the high gear ratio, the americans recommend it for surface bait fishing for wahoo- trolling so its not ideal for the UK type boat fishing ..My old dad used a Scarborough centrepin for many years for conger and skate as he said nothing to go wrong and he could move the big rays off the bottom. If you have the money & only want a reel for boats,go for the ABU 7000 or
7500 the latter has bearings rather than bushes & is great for uptiding,if you go after the big ling a lot consider one of the Shimano lever drags. The shop in Morecambe is Gerry's & is good, also has a web site just search Gerry's of Morecambe. Shakespeare are a good firm for back up with equipment faults but theres the problem ,they sell budget gear so you get budget quality. .. "Mike" wrote in message ... "Derek" wrote in message ... Found that another family member (a lot of us fish, but some more than
others) had purchased a Okuma reel but of a more expensive model and this had a different fault from new - took the pair back today and got a refund from a not very happy shopkeeper who doesn't seem to realize he has lost more than two customers. Going to look for Gerry's in Morecambe Incidentaly - Orkney fishing competion the next 3 days - went out last Sunday and a local lad was catching ling up to 14lb and plenty of them. - in July we were catching plenty of haddocks when you managed to get down through the mackerel about 1.5 mile out from St John's head but the trawlers have been in and sorted them out. Still plenty of coalies and mackerel plus ling etc - water was boiling in Hoy Sound this morning whilst going over. Will post if anything special caught in competion. Some cheap boats available up here but a long and expensive trip from south. Mick "Cliff Ravenscroft" wrote in message ... Shakespeare are a good firm for back up with equipment faults but theresthe
problem ,they sell budget gear so you get budget quality. I beg to differ, their rods are superb, their 5 metre Titanium beach rod is a winner, used by champions. Their Albacore lever drag reel is better than a Penn and dearer. I agree their after sales service is better than the others but their top of the range and midrange gear is better than other, dearer stuff and I know because I get it to review. Cheers, norman. |

I agree their "other" brand name gear is good at the top end but what I said
was SHAKESPEARE equipment is made at a budget standard,it is still usable but has limitations to use & robustness, basically you get what you pay for. I have some Shaky gear myself but uther makes beat it. Cheers Norm. Cliff. .. "SEAANGLING" wrote in message ...
