Default Johnson Outboard

I just bought a 1997 Javelin TE 400 20 ft. bass boat with a 200 h.p 1997
johnson Venom. I'm trying to find all the specs on the motor as far as
r.p.m's at w.o.t and the best prop for max. performance.

I just sold a 97 Stratos PE 295 with a 200 Venom motor - it was great till it
locked up with me in Tennessee in 2002.

I was running a 4 blade prop and the engine would turn about 5800 rpm. I think
the max on that engine is 6000 but I usually dont run wot much.

Define "Max. Performance" please. Do you want ripsnortin' W.F.O., cheek
flappin' top end? Do you want the boat to pop up on plane in a boat length?
Maximum bow lift and fuel economy? Max. performance means different things
to different people and you'll be hard pressed to get all three out of one
prop.

Proper propping is a science of compromise. If you want the boat to plane
quickly, you're not going to get maximum speed, conversely, top speed is
going to make holeshot suffer. Plus, to get maximum performance out of your
boat, that's going to depend on how the boat is loaded. It's going to
perform differently with just you and a minimum load than it is when you
have your pork rind eatin, beer drinkin brother in law and all his gear,
plus a full load of fuel and a livewell full of water.

What prop works best on Bubba's TE400 isn't going to necessarily work as you
want it on your boat. The best thing to do is to talk to a local, well
equipped marina and see if they'll hold your credit card hostage while you
take 3 or 4 different pitches and styles of props down to the lake and test
them. Load the boat as it would be under a normal day of fishing and test
them all. With a stopwatch and a handheld gps, find out how long it takes
the boat to get on plane, then from 0 to 30, from 30 to 60 and what your
topend speed is, at what rpm. Then, when you find the prop that you really
like, leave that on the boat and head back to the marina. Pay for that one
and give back the rest.

For your outboard, I'd say that if you're running around 5,800 to 6,000 rpms
at wot, then you're doing well. My guess is that you'll see 68 to 72 mph,
depending on weather/water conditions.
