I am considering a new vise, and would like to hear from anyone that has
used both Renzetti (Traveler or Presentation) and Dyna King Barracuda vises. Unfortunately, I really don't have access to either for testing. Thanks, Jim Ray |

Could you help with telling your experience with the Barracuda vs. the Traveler? I have a Renzetti Traveler, and like it, but have not done more than maybe touch the Barracuda. I'd enjoy hearing "your" experience between the two vises. (I have the basic specs on both, and prices.) DaveMohnsen, Denver |

Unfortunately, I really don't have access to either for testing. Thanks, Jim Ray When I bought my Traveler, I sat at the store for about an hour to "test-drive" a few different vises. The Barracuda is a great vise, one that I most likely would have enjoyed. The rotary is smooth, the jaws are well-made, and overall, it seems like a very quality vise. I went with the Renzetti simply because I liked the size and set-up better. Simple preference, no real differences (to a slightly-better-than-a-novice me, anyway). Then there's the price factor. The Renzetti is about 1/2 the price. If it were an "apples-to-apples" comparison on price, I prolly would have still gone with the Renzetti. Personally, I just like the way it feels when tying. YMMV, of course.... Dan |

: Go Regal I guess it boils down to personal preference, but I've never heard anyone complain that they accidentally shot their hook across the room and chipped their vise jaws while using any of the cam- or screw- tightened vises. I think the height of the Regal craze is passed. Scott |

i've used both and the renzetti traveler is a fantastic vise. great
quality build and "just works" like you think it should. after using the renzetti for a while the dyna vises (all of them) look & feel like a rolls royce. heavy, smooth, and almost jewel-like. but after a dozen flies i didn't quite get much "feel" from the dyna. maybe it's too heavy or something but i broke my thread a couple of times and i think (maybe) it was because the vise didn't move at all. i used to have the same problem with my thompson vises (i've used them for a few eons) but i don't seem to break thread using my renzetti. i know this is kind of subjective but the renzetti traveler is my choice over the dyna kings. in fact it's my choice over the more expensive renzetti vises but, again, that might be because the presentation vises are stouter/firmer. or something. oh, another thing, i'm not positive but i think you still have a choice in heads - if so i'd choose the "cam head" rather than the "screw" type. i've used both but the cam is more convenient when you shift the hook around. i also like the C clamp version more than the pedestal vise. probably because i've always used a C clamp-type of vise and i'm used to pulling my chair up closer than to a desk. i somehow feel more comfortable with my arms "free" rather than my elbows on a table (with a pedestal vise). naturally this is just a personal weirdness and not something anyone else might care about. another vise you might want to look at is the DanVise. it's fairly inexpensive like the rezetti traveler but very (very) different looking. i thought the composite (tough plastic) construction would make it flimsy and cheap but it's been quite a trooper so far. not better than the renzetti traveler but different in a good way. i've talked to other folks that like it better. i haven't tied more than a few flies on it but i liked it better than most other vises. lastly - i recommend that you find a way to get in front of any vise you're considering. really. a good fly shop will probably have one or two available to play with. if not many fly fishing clubs have "tying parties" where you can get some hands-on time (and plenty of other opinions!). dan (no relation to the danvise people) Jim wrote: I am considering a new vise, and would like to hear from anyone that has used both Renzetti (Traveler or Presentation) and Dyna King Barracuda vises. I own both.
I tied on the Renzetti for 5 years or more. Upgraded to the cam head. Finally decided taht I needed something better(more expensive ) and went to the Barracuda. Without a doubt the Barracuda is better built, and will last longer but it is also much more expensive. One of the nice things about the Renzetti which not true about the barracuda is that the head can be balanced by the handle, and when youturn the fly to get at the bottom or the side, it will stay their on its own. The Barracuda has a tendency to want to go back to the straight tying position, and you have to set a screw to keep it turned. If money was an issue, I would go with the Rezetti. It will last you 5 years or more, and will do all you want. "Jim" wrote in message ... Unfortunately, I really don't have access to either for testing. ---------- I have tied on both, and I like the looks of the Barracuda but frankly I tie better on the Renzetti for some reason (and I don't have a clue why). It is too bad you can't try them both out. If you have a local fly fishing club nearby, I am sure you could get both brought to a meeting and give them both a workout. If I had to buy one of the other, I would go with the Renzetti because it costs less and works well, or at least, well for me. One odd thing that is idiosyncratic to me -- I prefer the screw to the cam on the vise heads and they are cheaper too! It seems to hold better, IMHO and frankly I am used to it -- (and yes I have a cam head in the drawer) which may be the only value to my post is that I am used to the Renzetti and that may be all the difference that matters. I do tie some on my NorVise and I do like it for some types of flies (Large Streamers) a little better than the Renzetti. (Of course, this may be because I bought the NorVise and I am damn well going to use it or so says the Mrs.). Chris "I certainly hope that there was something in this post of value to you" |

Go here for a great forum on the vises you are interested in plus some
others. There's even a poll as to which vise people use. You'll enjoy it. http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=4319 On Mon, 14 Feb 2005 21:24:00 -0800, "Padishar Creel" wrote: "Jim" wrote in message ...
