Default Newbie in Illinois

I live in the burbs of chicago. Last year I bought a 17' Lund Rebel as
I wanted to get into fishing and got a good deal. I am interested in
hooking up with a local group or such to learn more about the sport. I
have a friend that is big time into bass fishing but every time we go
out - him in his boat me in mine - he is so friggin' hyper about
constantly moving. Also, I really don't care about just catching bass -
sorry if this is blashemy on a bass fishing group. Any help/direction
locally would be great!

Thanks, Rick

Bass is NOT the only fish in town !

There is more to fishing than Small Mouth and Large Mouth Bass !

Walleye, Pickerel, Pike , Muskies, Land-locked Stripers, Lake Trout, Catfish, perch,
Crappies, etc, etc, hell the list is long ! Dont let someone sway you into just one fish
species.

Sorry I can't help you with you locale fishing as I fish inland and on the Jersey Shore.

This isn't a bass fishing group, you know. The name of it is just
rec.outdoors.fishing. A lot of what's posted in here is about bass,
though, so I can see where you got that idea.

Don't go with your friend any more. He's been overly influenced by
all those TV shows about bass fishing where they keep viewership by
showing the boat going to a new spot often. There's not enough
activity in just fishing to keep the viewer's attention. The number
of boats and fuss (where are the cameras, etc.?) will scare off the
remaining fish, too, requiring moving around. This may or may not be
a good strategy in real life.

Your state DNR should know of organized fishing groups. I'd be
surprized if they didn't. Your local sporting goods store may have
some help for you. Your local chapter of Trout Unlimited probably
knows about other fishing, too, though they tend to be fly casters,
many of them try for other fish than trout and many of them know other
styles of fishing and know of other groups.
