While ice fishing, do you use traps or short jigging rods? I've always
used traps, but am intrigued by the rods.
Thanks.

By traps, I assume you mean tip ups? A device that has a flag that pops up
to alert you that a fish has taken the bait? Here in Wisconsin, we're
allowed 3 lines, so it's legal, and done all the time, to set out two tip
ups and jig with a short jigging rod.

What would you like to know about jigging rods? Other than the fact that
they're a riot to use.

Yep, tip-ups...aka 'traps' here in Maine. Except for certain species, we
can have 5 holes. Just so happens I am down to 4 traps, so I have a good
excuse to buy a jig. And by 'riot to use' I assume you mean fun? LoL
I'm guessing it's more efficient than a trap. Many times by the time you
get to a trap the fish has taken a ton of line and/or has swallowed the
bait.

Ice? What Ice!!!!

Here in Northern Illinois the ice is almost completely gone from the rivers.
Only about 8 ft of shore ice left in spots of fast current. Thin ice on the
lake systems is too scary to go out on. Temps in the 40's and 50's for the
next 4 days. Open water below dams on the Fox River is just right for me
this weekend.

Thanks to Steve for the input. For $12.99, what the heck, I'll pick one
up and play with it for the next 3 or 4 weeks, then use it more next
winter

I too am seeing signs of spring, but in Northeastern P.A mountain region,
it's called a tease, especially since march is not here. I'm sure we are not
done with the snow yet. I wish we were.

P.s,

The geese had jackets on

Went out to Mavericks Break for the Quicksilver surfing today. Is about 40
miles from me at Halfmoon Bay, CA. Actually beautiful weather. Tee shirt
weather at the beach. Maybe 65. Sunny, big white clouds and the surf died
off to maybe 20'ers. Was much bigger yesterday they said, but the wind
changed and knocked down a lot of the size. Tonight hail storm warning on
the TV. Said they had dime size hail about 4 miles north of me. We had
hail about 5 minutes before the warning and it was only pea size. Supposed
to be really cold tomorrow. About 30 in the lower areas. I talked to a guy
in Western Wyoming yesterday about a camper I am interested in. He said was
snowing giant flakes, and was beautiful weather. How can you live like
that?

Alcohol. Plus the gorgeous summers make up for it.

With almost 4' of ice, they're still driving trucks on the lakes up here.

We only had about 40 days of below 32 degrees weather here. The ice on lakes
is about 8 to 12 inches and less. Most all our snow is gone. Forecast looks
good. Even saw geese heading north at high altitude today at noon. Looks
like the big thaw is heading our way. I for one am glad to see it come.
