Default Hellbenders?

Any of you fellas ever seen any of these ginormous salamanders while trout
fishin'?

http://hellbenders.sanwalddesigns.com/index.shtml

The fellas at work were talkin' about Waterdogs today, and I ask, "what's a
waterdog?" So one of the guyz says look up Hellbenders. I did and I can
admit that I have never seen on any of the streams that I have fished.
However, I will be lookin' more closely from now on.

Won't mother be pleased, when I bring one home for her to fry up!

Theses aren't the same critters.

"Unlike mudpuppies, hellbenders have external gills only as larvae. They
lose the gills when they reach about 5 inches long, but retain gill slits
through their entire lives. They do have lungs and are capable of gulping
air from the surface, but they tend to do all of their breathing through
their skin. Hellbenders are completely aquatic, and only rarely have they
been reported to come out of the water for any period of time -- there are a
few reports of them wandering across land during very heavy rains."

If you look at the two websites: the one above and this one,

http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7...5084--,00.html

you'll see that mudpuppies keep their gill throughout their lives, while
Hellbenders lose their gills.

If I come across one, I'll save it so you can fry it up for breakfast, your
next trip down.

Better not. Hellbenders have toxic secretions from their skins.

It's ok, I'm immune to toxic secretions. I lick toads too.

Licking toads cures depression. The problem is, every time I stop licking
him, he gets depressed again.

pretty timely post, mark. i spent the easter week-end with my fella at his
father's house in eastern kentucky. during the ride there, kim shared with
me tales of fishing for smallmouth with "spring lizards." being that i am
fascinated by snakes and lizards, i expressed an interest in seeing one of
these lizards, to which he replied that we could search one out in the
spring that runs along his homeplace. Sunday morning we got up and after
breakfast donned our boots and headed out. i eagerly assisted in turning
over rocks in search of the slimy prize. it wasn't long before kim had one
in his hands, but it was lost in an effort to transfer it to my hands. a
few minutes later another lizard was captured and this time we made a
successful pass- off. i held the mudpuppy, periodically dipping it in
water, for a few minutes and then watched it crawl up my arm. i watched its
adorable little toes as they attempted to grip my skin while he made his way
up to my shoulder. i was delighted. as i told kim, that experience meant
more to me than recieving a dozen roses. that's the good stuff.

quite true- i am fully aware that (if they are what i think they are) they
are salamanders. obviously the term "spring lizard" is a common term
attached to this creature, as is waterdog or mudpuppy and i think we are all
aware that this being does not bark or **** itself when it's happy to see
someone.
i used the word lizard casually, but i do appreciate the correction. i'd
hate to embarrass myself somewhere, like at a dinner party, or on roff, by
using an incorrect description of my slimy friend.
