Hubby and I are wanting to try a 3/4 or 1-day trip out of San Diego the
first week of May. Neither of us has been sal****er fishing before... just small bass and crappie in Missouri lakes. Does anybody have recommendations for a couple of rookies? Point Loma vs H&M vs Fisherman's Landing (or others)? Which boat(s)? Hubby gets motion sickness, so if one boat or trip is smoother than others, that would be good to know. Also, on the overnight trips, does everybody sleep together in a large berth area, or are there cabins available on some boats? Do we need to take food & drinks, or is it available on the boat? Is there a place to stow valuables (purse, camera, etc)? What sort of weather can we expect during the first week of May? -HK |

Go to www.sport-fish-info.com/ This is the website for Allcoast Sportfishing. There you will find message boards that will answer virtually anything you want to know about westcoast fishing. The are also links to fish reports and all the landings so you can find out the details about all the boats that fish the Cal. and Mex. waters. Dont overlook Seaforth Landing Sportfishing at Mission Bay, a few miles north of San Diego bay. I would encourage you to consider a 1 1/2 day trip. These boats have recently been getting limits of yellowtail with some albacore also. On the 3/4 day boats you will be catching rockfish, bass, bonito, barracuda with the occasional lingcod and yellowtail. Both of these trips generally fish Mexican waters so you do not need to purchase a Cal. fishing license. Check with the landing/ boat first to verify this. Also, on the overnight trips, does everybody sleep together in a large berth area, or are there cabins available on some boats? Do we need to take food & drinks, or is it available on the boat? Is there a place to stow valuables (purse, camera, etc)? What sort of weather can we expect during the first week of May? Some of the overnight boats have staterooms others have bunkrooms. The Allcoast website has links to the boats so you can see which boat offers what . Food and drink are available for purchase on all the boats. I would keep my wallet in a fanny pack or a pocket, cameras etc ought to be fine in a daypack/duffle in a bunk or on deck. The weather in May should average in the 60's during the day on the water. Expect the skies to be overcast some/most of the time. Do take a jacket and long pants. -HK HTH Lou w |

I would recommend a 3/4 day boat for a first trip. Also SeaForth fishing on Mission Bay. If you are staying near Sea World, this is the closest marina. The 3/4 day trips mostly fish Coronado islands on Mexico. About $75 for the trip including MX permits. Food is available on the boat, and is normally very good. Reasonable prices also. They have a grill so will do cheeseburgers, etc. I bring waters as I am cheap and the boat gets a buck a bottle. Can not bring beer as they have liquor license and the state prohibits you bringing your own if the boat is licensed. Tackle rental will be about $6, and a couple of bucks for the hooks and weights. You will need a pack of live bait hooks and a couple of weights. They fish live bait, and it is included in the price. Never had a problem with theft, just keep your valuables out of sight. Bring a camera as you will normally see lots of sea life. Dolphins, whales, and fish. There are reaonable motels, older but clean around the Pt. Loma landings. (H&M, etc). Go mid week and they are normally light loads, and the crew can help you more. As the other person said, look at the All Coast fishing board forums. Also SDFishing.com |
