Default PA bear attack

I just read a very brief report regarding an attack by a black bear on
a 21 year old female camper at Hickory Run campground yesterday. She
survived the attack, apparently when the bear was driven off by other
campers. From what I read, this bear seemed to have no fear of
humans.
I don't have a direct link, but I'm sure this event will be showing up
n the media today.

You boys at the Penn's clave watch your sixes.

I find it odd that the game commission is not considering this an attack.
You get the feeling that PA is having problems coming to grips with what
seems to be a growing problem.

It doesn't sound like an attack to me either. The bear gave
chase after the woman started running. That's not predatory
per se, just instinct.

What I find odd is that those three idiots aren't going to
be charged with any crime. If PA wants to come to grips
with bears it had better first come to grips with the humans
and educate them, with a stiff fine if necessary.

I agree with you, Ken, I think that they should be charged. PA is so
trashed up to begin with, you think they'd immediately fine them
heavily for camping in a no-camping area.

And you see folks leaving food all over in the state parks, chuckling
at the cute bears who come into their campsites.

Hm.......that sort of invites the question of why Ms. Feeney faked her
injuries........not to mention how she managed to fool the medical personnel
at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

And your point is?

I suspect that the great state of Pennsylvania would just love to
prosecute.......but, unfortunately, the felons were probably smoking dope
and in the company of a poorly trained award winning mutt.......what's a
D.A. to do?

She probably didn't fake them. They didn't sound like much in the
way of bear injuries. A good slash and a claw in the leg? The minor
scratches and such were probably what she got from running / crawling
around in the dark in the brush.

It does sound like an attack, but not a serious one, as in the bear
deciding to grab a person who was just innocently on the trail.
Sounds a bit more like a provoked response. If it had been a serious
bear attack, with intent to do more than swat away a nuisance, she'd
probably not have been walking out of it.

Dunno about the dog, but I'd bet one of your shiny nickels that they
had dope somewhere around. The version of the story I read sounded
like a doper's dream of a bear attack.

The publicity showing that that site is dangerous may have an effect
on the illegal camping and partying that goes on there. Bonus for PA
Parks?

My brother-in-law was attacked by a black bear while he was in his tree
stand in northeastern Pennsylvania this past deer season.

Is he ok? What happened? Could you describe it a little bit?

I wonder if seasons matter. Was he rifle hunting or bow hunting?

We've always encountered bears in the June - October timeframe.
