Although I love to fish for trout there's nothing like the fight, the
sheer tenacity and guts of a smally on the fly. And when you're lucky enough to get into an 18" to 20" one - WOW! We met Wolf Fri. evening in Merrill and went directly to our favorite spot on the Wisconsin River. It was really hot but didn't slow the fishing. I nailed 5, a 15", a 14" and 3 dinks. I used the flies Dave PA just tied for me for this trip. They were super. I think Wolf caught 5 also. My friend Keith, who insisted on using a spinning rig caught none. Serves him right. :.) Sat. morning we met George Cleveland for breakfast at Champs. (Thee spot for breakfast in Merrill) George was going home to sleep after just getting off work and didn't plan to fish with us. Too bad, he's a good man. There are plenty of fine trout streams in the Merrill area but George advised us not to bother as it has been too hot. So back to the Wisconsin for bass. It was a much cooler day and the fishing in the AM was great. Aroumd noonish it turned completely off. Up to that point I was having a very fine day. Had caught 5 more bass, one a real lunker. Keith using his fly rod, smart man, caught 12. Wolf got several nice ones also. Rather than beat the water for naught we parted early. It was a fine trip. I've fished for small mouth in a lot of places around the US and Canada and have found none better than this spot on the Wisconsin River. Next time you hear Wolf and I planning this smally trip consider joining us. You won't be sorry. |

Also, any pics of the area? BestWishes, DaveMohnsen Denver |

Wooly Buggers tied with red thread, dark olive chenille body, black
hackle, black maraboo tails 1-1/2 times length of body, oval silver tinsel rib, red head, tied on short shank steelhead hooks, heavily weighted. He tied me sizes 4, 6, and 8. The 6's worked best. I didn't take any pictures but Wolf took a whole bunch. He might just post some to ROFF. |

I've got half a dozen or so that give a pretty good idea of what the place looks like......but nowhere to post them. I'll be happy to send them to anyone who asks. Wolfgang |
