My sister gave me a fly-rod...

Hi folks;

For my 49th birthday, my sister gave me a Cortland "Fairplay" fly
fishing outfit, which included a VHS videotape I've been studying.

With a great deal of trial-and-error, I can now get a dry fly onto the
water, sometimes as much as 20 feet from where I stand, occasionally in
somewhere near the desired direction, unless there is so much as a blade
of grass anywhere behind me, which will voraciously do unto my fly as
Charlie Brown's kite-eating tree didst do...

I'd mention the effect of a gusty cross-wind as well, but I suspect you
all can guess what happened.

All foolishness aside for the moment, though, does anyone know of a
group, club, class, or whatever in south-central washington state that
might help me get past the beginner's learning curve?

At the moment, I'm thrashing about and looking silly while others reel
in a great flopping harvest of fish on power-bait and treble-hooks.

Left early Sunday morning. Fishing Saturday was great. Will post a TR
with particulars in a day or two. (Came home with the notion that I
really need one o' those jay oh bee thingies, so I've been revising and
sending out the CV instead of TRing.) Hang on a bit.....

I'd forgot to mention... My grandfather was a fly-fisherman, and a
fishing rod of his was given to me. It looks like split bamboo,
six-sided and beautifully kept save for some rust on the tip guide.
I was wondering whether I should try to fish with it or just keep it as
a memento, but I don't know whether age might have weakened it or if
technology has simply passed it by.

There are three tip sections, one slightly shorter than the other two.

Any opinions? Even if I do use this rod, it won't be for a while. I'm
still a very green newbie as fly-fishing goes, having only a few months
ago been given that Cortland starter kit and not having a great deal of
time to practice with it. Thrashing around with this fragile old beauty
would likely turn tragic in a hurry.
