Suppose:
you arrive at a 40 acre lake you have never fished before. It is noon and you have only an hour to fish. You are fishing from shore. What would be the first bait you would try? |

Definitely something fast moving, possibly a spinnerbait. Gives you the versatility, and pretty weedless. Standard white, or white/chartreuse. #3 Willow with indiana (if you want to go that far, but have a colorado ready in case water is dirty. This is just me, only an hour to fish, and 40 acre lake, gotta cover water and pick off as many as you can. If I was to throw one bait! Chris |

Chris I would first have to say; scan the water quickly for cover (stumps, laydowns, weeds) and structure (rock, clay, sand). Is there a shaded area? Then features; deep end (dam if you will), or where the out flow of lake is. After a quick look at the lake, I would pick the dam, deeper water with rock, stumps or laydowns (shaded would be great). If this is not an option, I'd pick the area with the best cover I could find. As for lure; I agree with Chris. Bring a spinnerbait. Mine of course would be a Secret Weapon Lure. I'd pack one or two and a hand full of different blades and a couple of skirts. I'd then be able to pick the right blades and skirt quickly to match the water color etc. Not to mention I wouldn't need a whole tackle box of spinnerbaits! I would also bring a carolina rig with a few soft plastics (green pumpkin, watermelon, black worms) and a few lizards in the same colors. This would help you judge the depth of the water, the cover/structure, and you could move it quickly or slowly to find out what the fish want. Is this a hypothetical question? If not good luck fishing, this lake. Let us know how ya do. -Justin www.SecretWeaponLures.com |
