In just under a week's time, our own recently retired reprobate, Asadi, will
be piloting a small train northward to pick up his erstwhile navigator in Milwaukee, whence we will continue (by fits and starts) to the land of pasties and distances measured in beers. Ah, the sweet life! At last count, Bill Claspy, George Cleveland and Wayne Knight had all expressed an interest in stopping by at some point in the following week in order to offer their several specialized services in preventing us from hurting ourselves. Our legal counsel has (most unfortunately.....for us, that is) been forced to cancel a scheduled appearance due to circumstances beyond his control......um......or a sudden fit of good sense, or something. Anyway, as we will be incommunicado for most of the trip (cell phone coverage is virtually nonexistent in much of the U.P.) anyone planning to join us should contact me sometime before next Thursday to make arrangements for meeting places and times. At the moment we don't have an itinerary beyond a probable first day in the Bruce Crossing area. Tentatively scheduled events include a float on an as yet unidentified smallmouth stream (we will have two kayaks at our disposal), a visit to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, small stream trout fishing, "Drive to the Rise" (cruising the streamside woods and fields and bailing out at the faintest hint of fishy activity), and a concerted assault on the state of Michigan's beer supply. Come one, come all. Wolfgang |

With the understanding that it may make me seem like a North Cackalacky
wannabe, please consider this a ping, Wolfgang. If you wouldn't mind, give me a ring sometime tomorrow or Monday so I can give you my current clave plans. I'm in "the book" :-) Or drop me an email (use my usual address, not the one above) so I can reply that way. Wm |

I'll check maps and talk to John. Will be in touch in a day or two. I'm hoping somewhere near Seney, but I know that makes a longer drive for you... I'm not sure how much further west than Seney I'm going to be able to go. We're mobile. Depending on schedules, we may be able to meet different people at different times and places. Hell, just to GET there ya gotta go through Hodag country! ![]() Wolfgang ask jeffie.....he knows! ![]() it's gotta be real, i know it must be so 'cause i saw its likeness on a huge billboard in rhinelander (or some such place in northern wisconsin). that thing definitely chews on its prey. we were fortunate to make our way through that town and its several suspiciously placed traffic detours...much safer to fly into marquette and drive west, imo. that was my plan, alas. of course, one must keep a proper vigil when visiting the u.p. there is also that seemingly everpresent and more sinister pasty to be avoided. much scarier than the hodag. hell, the bitin bugs and stingin nettles are easier to tolerate than the pernicious pasty. ... asadi, be careful. sorry to miss this yooper-do. the combination and association of asadi, claspy, knight, cleveland, and your-own-sweetself in such a lovely and fish-filled watery wilderness is gonna be high drama and sure comedie. hope you guys take lots of photos... and, if the opportunity presents, try the sturgeon upstream of the place we stopped. i think of that stream a lot. i regret i'll miss visiting the u.p. this year, but, thankfully, i suspect it changes little over the course of a year or two, and i look forward to finding my way up there again. jeff |
