Default Whiting Spey Fly Necks

I picked up a whiting spey fly neck, bronze, and I'm having trouble using
it. All of my spey hackles wind up looking thin and wispy. I haven't had
any trouble with other sorts of heron substitutes, but these hackles aren't
coming out right.

I haven't figured out how to use more than one hackle without binding down
the first, and if I put too many wraps on, I obscure the body, anyway.

Any advice?

Most spey flies are tied very sparse. I still haven't learned how to make
them sparse enough! I usually use schlappen, and if you don't remove one
side of the feather before tying, it ends up too heavy. Also schlappen is
supposed to be crimped with your finger nail so that it does not stick
together.

I never cared for those Spey hackles Scott. For the very reason you
mentioned.

Never cared for the Whiting Spey hackles for just that reason. Too fine and
fragile.

I've actually changed my mind about them, since I took a workshop in Spey
tying. Some practice with them really pays off, and it is advisable to put
some sort of rib around the stem. I think the line has really improved
over the last year or so, too.
