Time for a little update on the action. Saturday morning after I picked up my bagel and paper at Gaviola's, I took a turn past the parking lot at Gosman's, and saw a pile of boats drifting around in front of the inlet. Naturally I thought "the herring are in". Well, yes and no. Most of the boats there were weekend warriors, rather than the charterboats. They were catching herring though, but not a lot of them. In fact it probably took a couple of hours to get enough of a supply to get through a tide. And then, it turned out that bluefish like herring as well as bass. And, there just aren't enough bass around anyway. Trollers are doing better than anyone using live bait, no matter what kind. They are getting their limits on half days, but not much more. For years the charter captains would wait with baited breath (whatever that means) for Capt Fritz Hubner to make his annual "It's over" statement, because they knew that any day after that, it would break wide open. I saw Fritzie down at Star Island and asked if he thought it was over, but he wouldn't bite. Instead we both kind of agreed that we thought the season was just going to keep dribbling away, with acceptable fishing one day, followed by poor the next, but no really great days, just as it has been for the last 3 - 4 weeks. Last year the best bass action of the year took place between the middle of November and the middle of December, right up until the season ended officially. I'm afraid it's not going to happen this year, although I've been wrong before. I think this past year had the worst striper fishing in many years. I hope it's not a sign of things to come.
