Hi everyone,
I was sitting here looking thru Hurricane Katrina Salvage, and most of these boats say "Engine submerged, seized up". How hard would it be to rebuild say a 150 Johnson or Evinrude motor that's been submerged? I do have a little better then general knowledge when it comes to car engines, but not outboards. I know some of you have dropped an engine or two off the rear of your boats!! Just admit it and you'll be glad you got it off your chest. I sunk a 6 horse before but I just turned it in at the marina and $200 later, back in action. Is that something better left to the pro's, or can an avid do-it-yourselfer do it with some diligence and time? Anyone have about an average cost to have one professionally rebuilt? Thanks for you're time, Doug |

That's true.... I guess it has been some time that these motors have been
subjected the elements now, inside and out. Seems like such a waste though that all these newer boats and motors are just trash now. I seen a 19' 2004 Ranger Reata with a 200 HP 4 stroke ( thought it was a 150)with some damage for $1200.00, and the motor was said to be siezed up, and the hull had a few scrapes on it, nothing major, is why I was asking. I guess I had my head in the clouds a bit dreaming of a newer bass boat. Just not at the expense of a whole new motor AND all the cosmetics it will need. Thanks just the same though for taking the time, Doug P.S. Anyone else getting cabin fever?? I've been out a couple times, but not enough to keep my sanity I'm afraid "Calif Bill" wrote in message nk.net... If the boat is in halfway decent shape, you can get a motor for a reasonable price and re-sell it if nothing else. Jaco Marine has a '99 Merc 200 EFI listed for $5500. I just looked at http://www.nadaguides.com and they list an 04 Reata (of course they include trailer, trolling motor and outboard) at $17,830 in average shape. So, you could spend $6,700 and have a boat worth almost $18,000.00? It seems to be a no-brainer to me. Replacing carpet if needed wouldn't be a big deal, you might have to replace some wiring, but still...... I'd do a little more investigating if I were you. -- Steve @ OutdoorFrontiers http://www.outdoorfrontiers.com G & S Guide Service and Custom Rods http://www.herefishyfishy.com |

Well Steve, it looks as though that one got away....
http://www.yachtsalvage.com/Listings/HI05168.htm I was thinking the same thing though as you, but my thing is the money to put up front for it and how much it would take just to get it fishing. (Mortgage and kids you know) I was more looking for a project boat that I could put little bits and pieces together a little at a time. There's a lot of deals on Bass Boats out there from the hurricane though. I called those people at that site and inquired about that boat, and it was indeed needing a little bit of fiberglass work as well, and the bilge was pretty full of mud the guy said. Regardless that would still be worth a hard look indeed. Anyway, I appreciate the time you took in replying! Doug Good lord, if you can get an 04 Ranger Reata for $1,200.00, JUMP ON IT!!! That sounds like a good idea untill you try to determine what chemicals or waste products it was soaked in. If a guy knew what the boat had been exposed to it would be worth it. I've learned that I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy it! I mean, how much can it cost to replace the carpets and seats? $1,000? Rinse/pressure wash the rest with a detergent and plenty of fresh water. Re-wire the boat? Maybe another $1,000.00 So 8 or 9 grand is spent. You now have a boat that's worth twice that. Still seems like a no-brainer to me. -- Steve @ OutdoorFrontiers http://www.outdoorfrontiers.com G & S Guide Service and Custom Rods http://www.herefishyfishy.com |

Doug,
It's difficult to answer your question. It really depends on how long the engine was under water and, more important, how long was it out of water before they did anything to it. Normally, the first thing you do to an engine as soon as it comes out of the water is flush it with fresh water, drain all the water, fuel and oil out, and if you can refill everything and start it ASAP. If not "pickle" the engine (fill it with some kind of oil) to prevent rusting. |
