Default TR: Spring has sprung

The weather in New England this week has been exceptional, so I grabbed an
opportunity to get out on the river for a few hours yesterday afternoon. I
have been wanting to try out a 2WT rod I bought this winter, so I got out my
"Reel-E-Good Line Winder" (yeah, that's reel-e it's name) and started to
spool up a reel with the backing and line I had on one of the spools. After
about 10 yards of backing were on the reel, the freakin' 2-sided spool
separated just enough to create one helluva mess. Hmmm. . . choices:
untangle the mess and lose precious daylight, or start over with some 3WT
line and overline the rod. I chose the latter, although I wasn't happy about
it. When I tested the rod I had used 2WT, and I knew how well that worked.

Once at the river, I could see some good hatch activity going on, but no
fish rising to feed. I guessed that there must have been plenty of food in
the water and no need for the fish to come to the surface. I also found
myself in a drift, reflecting for a few minutes about life and death, and
how fickle fate can be. In the past few weeks, I've had one friend lose his
mother, and another a daughter. I shook off the maudlin and brought my head
back to fishing, tied on a #18 PT, and went to work on the riffles. For me,
that's what fishing is - a chance to concentrate on something other than
woes or business, something pleasant and whole. On about the 3rd or 4th
cast, BANG - fish on. A nice 14" rainbow.

That was it for the day, but it was all I needed. I had a few more hits, but
no more tight lines. I headed for home and supper feeling much more peaceful
than before I started out.

It really was revitalizing - more than I expected.

Hi Tim,
Glad you had a chance to get out. I have to do it soon.
We get so much wind out here this time of year I have to pick carefully
where I chose.

We actually had some good, steady breezes yesterday, which stopped
immediately when I got to the river. I, of course, attribute that to clean
living. ;-)

I took a chance myself yesterday...I found the water temp in my next door
river to be in the fifties...the smallmouth should start doing their thing
any time.

I caught one seven inch chub and a humongous crawdad. He had both claws on
my white sparkle wooly bugger and didn't want to let go. Probably about a
three and one half incher...dark green with red flanks.

A real beauty of a crawdad....
