there's at least one fly shop with some old reports of a few streams.

Damn, the one year that I'm not going to be in Idaho in August!
(Of course, that may change. Jen's family lives out there, and
and circumstances that require our presence have a way of popping
up during our vacation time...)

I know of two fly shops there; the Orvis shop on US 95 on the
north end of town (it's hidden in a bunch of trees so it's easy
to miss, but it's right next to an Olive Garden and a Borders
Books on the west side of the highway) and another shop on the
east side, almost right across the street from Orvis, whose
name I forget. Both shops are pretty helpful with local info
and both offer guided trips.

Actually, there's another fly shop downtown, too, but I don't
like that one nearly as much.

The shops will probably try to steer you to one of the following:

1) The North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene, about a half hour drive east
of town. You want to get upstream from the forks, as the South
Fork is basically a toxic drainage ditch from the mine tailings
out by Kellogg.

2) The Spokane River in WA, about half an hour west. Actually, the
stretch flowing through the park right downtown is as good as any.

3) The St. Joe River, about 1 to 2 hours away, depending on how far
upstream you go. If you have a full day to fish, that's where I
would go. Lots of wild cutthroats in a beautiful valley.

4) The lower Clark Fork, in Montana, about 2 hours to the east.
If you go there, I would hire a guide with a boat, as it's a mighty
big river down there.

You'll probably be fishing attractor dries at that time of year --
bring Stimulators, humpies, hoppers, beetles, stuff like that.

I'm guessing you will probably be at the Cd'A resort downtown.
If so, you are right on the lake, so you might want to just to take
a rod down and walk the lakeshore in the evening. Most of the fish
in the lake go deep in August, but you never know. I've seen big
rainbows cruising the shore late at night, and carp tailing in the
shallows. There's lots of smallmouth too, and they usually fish
pretty well in late summer.

Also within walking distance of the Cd'A resort: TW Fisher's brewpub,
home of the Cd'A Brewing Co., Capone's Pub, which has something like 40
brews on tap, the city beach (check out the afternoon bikini hatch) and
riverfront park, where they have free concerts several evenings a week.

If you need more info, I can hook you up with the in-laws and they
can probably answer any questions you might have.

Thanks, you've given me quite a bit to work with for a start. FWIW I'll
be in the area the week of Aug 15-17 if your plans change. Instead of
flying from Indy into Spokane, my wife and I may just make a long road
trip out of it, giving us some time to see and do some things we might
not get a chance to do again.

start sucking up to my close personal friend, John Hightower!

start sucking up to my close personal friend, John Hightower!

Actually I was going to offer to take Wayne down the Clarks Fork- or
possibly meeting him at a location I emailed him about- depending on the
water conditions- mid August the Clarks Fork can get pretty warm. The only
hitch in the giddyup is that we are doing a wedding at the house August 12-
the kids will be staying around for a few days before they head back to Ft.
Knox. My activities following the wedding may be a bit constrained. I am
supposed to get the new son in law out for a fishing or fishing/camping trip
at some point.

Glad to hear it- though, comming from a dem, I'll have to remain skeptical
as to the overall implications of the issued statement. For instance you
don't say that you havn't been responsible for the loss of a boat through
other some other means, or that maybe, just maybe you jumped clear of a boat
that was in the process of sinking- so technically it didn't go "out from
underneath me". You can't be to carefull these days :-)

hey John...are you coming over to the Madison to visit with us this
year? warren claims the fishing is on...and jacklin apparently nailed a
big one in the channel between the lakes. makela and i will be at the
slide inn, daniel and the lovely Cindy will be at the cabin creek area
for a few days, and warren is gonna be in and out during the week. Frank
Reid claims he's fleeing nebraska for a few days too. Not sure who else
is planning on showing up. still haven't heard from Roger. If he didn't
come he was going to cede his room at the slide inn to one of our crowd.
it would be great to see and fish with you again.
