What do fly fishers like?

Hello all,

I'm in the process of creating a website whose purpose is to help
people do nice things for each other.

Many times, you want to do something for someone, but all you know
about them is that they are interested in a particular hobby or
activity that you don't know much about.

I'm collecting information about as many different hobbies as I can.
So...two questions.

1. What do fly fishers like/need/want?
I'm looking for a list of things that someone else could pick out for
you that you would really enjoy receiving. This can include items, gift
certificates to particular stores, magazine subscriptions, books,
favors, trips to events, etc. Anything that you would find useful
and/or desirable in your capacity as a fly fisher. These don't have to
be "bought" items. If you really need lots of empty egg cartons, put it
on the list!

2. If I was married to a fly fisher, and wanted to better understand
what they are talking about over the dinner table without actually
becoming a fly fisher myself, what books or websites should I look at?

Any information would be appreciated by myself and likely by the
families and friends of many fly fishers! The guys over in the
woodworking newsgroup did a great job on their page. I have high hopes
for the fly fishers!

Um...I'm afraid you'll have to see your own spouse for that one. As to
recommending it as a gift idea, that's a whole different kind of
website than the one I'm making.

Does anyone else have a suggestion? What about catalogs like Cabelas?
Do you like stuff from there or is that to far towards camping?

Spousal Sponsorship Program does not presume to define "spouse" or
"sponsor" in any particular way. If someone wants to be nice to rw,

Actually, I have both a spousal unit AND a partner, but it's still hard
to get a blow job.

The ideal gift that a non-flyfishing woman can give her flyfishing
husband (or partner or whatever), IMO, is the freedom to go fishing
whenever and wherever he wants, with whomever he wants, with no nagging
or complaints. She should also listen attentively, with no hint of
skepticism, to the stories he tells upon his return.

Bamboo rods are usually a good gift idea; Phillipson, Granger, or a custom
short lite rod, like a 6' 2wt are good choices. Also fly tying materials,
especially those essential but hard to get items, like albino wombat belly

yet, a jungle cock and a jungle hen. And you can never go wrong with a

Best bet is just to realize that anything a fisherman is saying about his
fishing trip is either a lie or a damn lie, and just nod your head and smile
as if you actually believed any of it. You could try reading "The Dry Fly
and Fast Water" by George LaBranche, after a few chapters of which you will
come to understand that your flyfisher is totally insane, obsessed with
outsmarting a fish that has a brain the size of a dry pea, and having a
somewhat difficult time of it. The flyfisher spends his day up to his flask
in a chilly stream, using a $1000 stick to tangle his $60 line up into some
branches, emitting noxious fumes from his pipe and his waders, while
imbibing more single malt than is appropriate for a Sunday morning, and
after hours of tangling his line, falling in the stream, and using a stream
of vocabulary that would make the very devil blush, he finally catches a
fish, and lets it go. What's not to understand?

Where do you like to shop for your wombat fur? Is Orvis good? What
other sites would you like a gift certificate from?

Orvis is a word that can generate quite a thread around here. That's
beacause some of their stuff is very good, some overpriced, and all
generally marketed toward "sports" (wealthy neophytes). Still, some Orvis
rods I've seen are as nice as any anywhere, and they have good resale value.

I'm more of a local flyshop guy myself, great places to pick up some locally
tied flies, other stuff your gonna buy anyway. I figger if they don't have,
I prolly didn't really need it anyway.

Personally, I like Cabelas a lot more than Orvis.
