What I did and what I could do better to combat against mosquitoes.
Before I left for my trip to Alaska, I cut my hair short, almost to a crewcut. It's easier to keep clean, and for the times I did have to rub bug juice on my head. Washable hats, buy cheap ones or get freebees, and spray them with mosquitoes repellant. I made a big mistake by trying to wash my felt cowboy hat....shrinkage. The Outdoor Research Spring Ring Headnet $9.95 It folds up into a small ring and it was a blessing in disguise http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/st...productId=1110 Lightweight bug off shortsleeve shirts....they work! Cycling arm warmers. I hate long sleeve shirts when fly-fishing because there are many times when you have to dip the arm in the water. With cycling arm warmers, you can easily move the sleeve up the arm, they're lightweight and you can spray them with Deet. 100% Deet, buy two small pocket size, and know where you put them at all times. Earplugs, especially if you sleep in a tent. Thousands of mosquitoes together will sound like a B-52 and they get trapped between your rainfly and your tent. Other Items: Solar Shower. It will have to be a quick one, the mosquitoes will be out in full force, but a shower feels like a million dollars. Camp where the wind picks-up. Lots of wind = NO Mosquitoes! The temperatures in Alaska, were between 40 and 80, yes 80 degrees and can change within 6 hours. Come prepared. Hand lotion, your skin will get dry. After lotion bug medicine to stop the itching. fwiw, -tom |

Just got back from the Yukon with nary a mosquito bite. Used Downy
Fabric Softener Sheets. Rub 'em on your body, hat, shirt collar and mosquitos will never land on you. Upside was that my bother and I camped together for two weeks and arrived home smelling a little less like two guys fishing in the Yukon for two weeks and a little more like the wife's linen closet.
