removing hooks

I wouldn't mind seeing a thread that would be a definitive guide on hook
removal from a fish. I would also like to see commentary on hook removal from
ot pike/muskie. This season i've already hooked my finger in the process and
required medical attention. Now before i even begin the process i don my rapala
glove. There is still even a chance of hooking the leg from a big fish a
flopping.

Check BPS catalog, page 219. There are a # of gimmicks, though I don't
know if they actually work or are worth the $

Well, I can tell you I tried many devices for hook removal. They all work
to some degree. My preferred method is to use a stainless steel long nose
needle nose pliers. I usually carry a hand towel with me to grip the fish
and then use the pliers to remove the hook. If the fish is flopping on the
floor throwing the towel over is head seems to calm the fish down so you
can then gab it.

I use this method on every thing from redfish, speckle trout, black drum
sheephead. The only fish I don't use this method on is a hardhead catfish.
I use a fish flipper to remove the hook without putting the fish in the
boat. It is a stiff metal hook that slides down the line to the hook. You
then flip the fish off the hook by swing the fish away from you.

The best thing I have yet found is 6" or 8" surgical forceps. Nothing is
better for removing small hooks from small fish, or for removing circle hooks.
I also carry a small needle nose pliers with a side cutter.
