I have a 1997 johnson 200 h.p Usually you won't need to use the choke when the motor is warmed up, but if the idle jets are getting a little plugged up with varnish you may need to use the choke more often. Having the carbs disassembled and cleaned thoroughly including all the jets will get it back to normal. You can do it yourself or have a shop do it. Carb kits (basically new gaskets) are usually pretty reasonable, but the shop labor will add up. -- Bob La Londe Fishing Arizona & The Colorado River Fishing Forums & Contests http://www.YumaBassMan.com -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |

![]() "BIG FISH 2006" wrote in message ... when starting an outboard motor, do you need to use the choke everytime you start it or is it just for cold weather? I have a 1997 johnson 200 h.p A lot of it seems to be on an individual basis. I've owned motors that from the time they were new, required choking to start the first time in the morning, then didn't require any choke at all for the remainder of the day. Friends with seemingly identical motors wouldn't use the choke at all under similar conditions! Other motors that I've owned didn't need to use the choke, or only when the weather was extremely cold. I would make sure that the motor is tuned up, has fresh spark plugs and everything is adjusted properly. Then, if it needs to be choked to start, so be it. As long as it starts and runs decently, life is good! -- Steve @ OutdoorFrontiers http://www.outdoorfrontiers.com G & S Guide Service and Custom Rods http://www.herefishyfishy.com |

The main reason I asked about the choke is, I get alot of smoke when I
start up, but I think it's from choking too much. I guess I just need to try it without once. |

I have a 1997 johnson 200 h.p I had a 97 200 Johnson Venom - always had to choke it the first time cranking it each day, not after that. Weather and temp did not matter.
