Spinning reel recommendation

Since the middle 1950s, I have fished the Penn SS reels. Today I saw a new
Penn SS4300G which is now made in China rather than Philadelphia. It has an
infinite anti -reverse feature which cannot be disengaged. This eliminates
those of us who like to back reel. A big pile of junk as far as I am
concerned. Any recommendations for my new drop shot rod, built according to
Steve's suggestion, will be greatly appreciated.

I really like the Shimano Stradic 2500 reel. It does have an infinite
anti-reverse, but it can be switched off. If the price is beyond your
budget, take a look at the Shimano Sahara models as well. I use both reels
for my guide business and they hold up well and are smooth when in
operation.

I was thinking of getting a high end reel like a stradic.Could I expect
it to last 3 seasons (8 months per) with only oiling. What would it set
me back? Thanks

Ardent is bringing out their spinning reel in 2007, and in talking to their
director, it sounds like they are shooting for best-in-class on this reel as
well. So, unless you're in a rush to buy a spinning reel, you have something
to look forward to.

By the way; price on the XS casting reel is $249.99. You can pick up a 2006
reel (which is identical except that it uses a hex nut to open the side
plate while the 2007 has a push-button release) for $50 less.

Thanks, Joe. I have used Penn Reels for years, having lived fairly close to
the factory when I was in school in Philadelphia. I built a drop shot rod
last month to Steve's specs and wanted to put a new reel on it. As the
weather here, as you know, has been somewhat windy, I suspect I am done for
the year with a few days available until February, perhaps. Will keep an
eye out for that reel. Thanks and happy Thanksgiving.

I was impressed with the Ardent reel too. Got to try it out at the
Southeast Outdoor Writers Association meeting last month. Will get one
of the spinning reels as soon as they are available.
