more gps help

tried to send this to chris - it bounced - any help appreicated

Hi Chris

Jerry suggested i contact you - i got Mapcreate 6 and I
found a cable to hook my GlobeMap 100 to the computer but it has a
power
cord with it - I have no idea how to hook that up. The power cord
has
two wires attached to the computer end but just bare wire on the other
end.

Also, how do you download the info from the GPS? Does yours have a
card
in it? MIne is a hand held unit - have not hooked it up yet, don't
want
to mess up anything.

*almost* threw away my IFinder because loading the software was/is a PITA!

maybe the power leads are to save battery power? But they attach to

Mine came with a crappy card reader and a 16mb MMC card. I was suppose to
upload my maps and information to the card through the reader... then put
the card into the unit. Sounds easy enough... or at least easier than my
Garmins, but noooo....

My computer had trouble with the reader and the card. Found out that the
card they sent was actually bad, so I bought a 32mb card. It also seems that
you can't use just any old reader, you have to use theirs.

Somehow, I was finally able to get most of middle Tennessee loaded in there,
but I bought a Garmin Vista to replace it. The I-Finder works well on the
bike with its larger screen, but Garmin is the only way to go for me from
now on.

Hear Hear! I found that I could use the same software and maps with a
couple different units myself. I still use my very first Garmin GPS map all
the time. A now discontinued 176. Great little unit. Its mounted on the
dash of my tin boat, but I also have a car cord for it, and it goes with us
on trips.

Software is on the laptop so can not tell you the name. Go to
http://www.geocaching.com/ and they have links to free software for
uploading and downloading data.

Don't know but not sure he could help. My old Globemap 100 is not
supported by MapCreate 6 or 5 - both of them require cards and card
readers. If I can ever download the waypoints to a ascii file I think
I can use them, tho. I have one GPS with 240 waypoints and another
with 748. Sure would like to get them all on one place. If I can I
can upload them to the GPS on my boat - it uses a card.

I had a Globemap 100 and gave it to Sean, and you're right, it does take a
card and a reader to use. I remember from the software that you had to
choose the pencil from the toolbar at the top and zoom into the area you
were interested in, then draw an area from one of the red? dots to another
until you had a map created, then send the info to a card. I don't recall
ever using the bare wires on the cable for anything, I think I taped them
off.
