Hey group!!

Thinking about getting a small engine for my horsepower restricted lakes,
9.9 to be exact. (Might get a 15 and put 9.9 stickers on it) I think I
found one locally, I think, but it's a short shaft, and I need a long. How
hard is it to put a 5 inch extension kit on this thing? Anyone got any
experience with this?

TIA,

Doug

I do not know if they make an extension kit for all the motors. Some, like
my Yamaha T-8 just have a long leg.

Howdy Bill,

Well, I found a mid 80's Johnson 9.9, and I found the kit on eBay, but I
just don't know what all is entailed in doing the install of such a kit. If
it's bip boom bah, done, then I would attempt it, but if its reseating "O"
rings, taking apart the water pump, adjusting linkages and the such, I would
probably opt to take it somewhere. BUT if I do that, there goes my savings
on the motor itself. If I can pick this thing up for $400.00 bucks, and an
extension kit for $50, that's a good deal. The dealership wants $275 for
the "NEW" kit and $100.00 an hour for labor. Might as well buy a more
expensive long shaft ready to go at that point.
I'm just trying to save a buck or two if I can.
Mechanically, I'm pretty strong, but I just haven't done much with outboards
in the past.

Thanks just the same for the input Bill!! I appreciate the response!

I would guess it is not much more complicated than changing the water pump /
impeller. From what I understand is a section of leg, and a longer
driveshaft. Probably an extension for the exhaust tube.

That would be illegal and easy to catch if somebody decided to call you on
it.

There is another option. There is a story going around about the Mercury
9.9 being easily turned into a 15. Also illegal as modifying an outboard to
increase horsepwoer except for racing closed courses is against regs.
However, that is much harder to catch as the serial number on your outboard
will match the stickers on your cowling.

Bass and Walley boats magazine did an article on the 9.9 upgrade using
factory parts and they came up with a motor that put out about 13HP. Not
truly a 15 as the stories go, but in my opinion a better option than
deliberately mislabeling your engine.

Hey Bob,

Yes, I understand it's not exactly legal.... But with the weight of my
boat, I would guarantee any 9.9 would still outrun me, so I doubt anyone
would give me a second look. The only difference, as I understand it,
between a Johnson or Mercury 9.9 and a 15 hp motor, is the carburetors.
Exact same engine, different carbs.
Besides, I don't understand why they just don't do a speed limit instead of
a HP restriction?? It seems that for a boat to be running on plane, would
cause considerably less wake then a boat merely "pushing" water. I'm all
for keeping the shoreline erosion to a minimum, so that's why it doesn't
make sense anyway.

Thanks for the insight though.. and as a side note, I do not do things
contrary to the law normally, this is one of those rare instances.

Letter of the vs spirit of the law. LOL.

I'm just saying that you don't want a ticket. Besides it would be a lot
harder to make a ticket stick if the motor was originally sold as a 9.9 vs
one that has been relabeled.

I once had 15hp Johnson with the long shaft extender, and I changed it over
and it didn't amount to much work, although it was a long time ago and I
don't remember the details.
$50 seems pretty reasonable for the kit. I sold my leftover kit a couple of
years ago for over a hundred.

Alright, thanks Bill,

By looking at the kits, there's not much there, so I figured as much but was
not sure... I appreciate it once again!
