Can I shoot the bass with a crossbow or do you recommend
a gun???

Crossbows are for nerds and weenies and a gun just isn't
efficient for bass fishing. What you need is Dupont Spinners:

Maybe you could shoot one with either, and around here both are used,
but in many states shooting game fish is illegal. If legal the limit
is often half that of bass taken on baits. Where a state considers
bass to be a nuisance species it's probably unregulated. If regulated
there might be a particular season or size or slot limit. Be sure you
know the regs.

In South Carolina, it is illegal to take any game fish with a crossbow or
bow and arrow or gun of any kind. Check with the state wildlife management
group in your area to see how the rules apply.
