I've been coming to this message board for about a year now. This is
my first year of fly fishing. Many of the people have been really helpful, either directly, or I have searched the archives to get answers. I know there's a lot of bickering that go on between folks & name-calling. But I couldn't help but notice that folks on both sides of these arguments have been helpful to me over the year. One person, Mike C. even sent me a used fly reel to try out (sent it all the way from Germany) with some extra spools of lines so I could experiment & learn some new things. I have children and am on a tight budget so it just wouldn't have been possible for me to go out and buy this stuff & he had an extra reel he wasn't using so he sent it to me. No cost. Just being a nice guy. And I've met several through this group (and have enjoyed some very nice private email from the folks here). I wondered if it would ever be possible for folks to just "agree to disagree" more on this board? I know there will be daily disagreements over stuff. You find that on most every message board. But it would be neat if folks could keep disagreements from getting so escalated that it detracts from the great fishing content and advice here. Just an observation and thought from a "new guy" who doesn't know squat about fly fishing, but loves having a place to learn more from good people here. |

Whoever told you off is a schmuk. (can't remember or be bothered to find out who it was - there are dozens of them here). This newsgroup contains an extraordinary number of deeply damaged, rather unpleasant people, for some reason. Where I fish, most fly-fisherpeople are unusually tolerant, and most places I've been in the world fishers are wise, tolerant and helpful. Not here, though. As you've seen, for some reason, Roff (rec.outdoors.fishing.fly) seems to have attracted an unusual skim of agressive middle-aged men, mostly american, with chips on their shoulders, who have nothing better to do than pick meaningless, vicious fights with each other. I've never met any of them, and I've no desire to. A few of them do know a few things about fishing, (I can never remember which ones, to be honest, are republican, and which democrat (in spite of the title of the group, american politics is the main subject of the group)), so I've been using it for information for many years. But I would strongly advise you to avoid this place and talk to some real fishermen who will be glad to help you. Lazarus |

This nut house, aka roff, is filled with knowledgable fishermen who have fished everywhere from Russia, to Alaska, to BC, to Labrador, to the far west, rocky mountain areas, the mid-west, the south west, south, east, new england, and chile/patagonia, and the salts from Maine to Belize, and yet Great Britain and Europe. If a legitimate question is asked on roff, there is always someone who will answer it *without pontificating*, or being a pompous bore. This is not a place for such folks. As far as Mike giving a reel for you to try, it would not be the first time such a thing has been done on roff. I have seen fly rods given to people who could not afford them, reels and lines donated, Tim S. from Maine who teaches flyfishing to school kids has received any number of such gifts including dozens of flies tied by roffians for his kids. I personally have sent a fly tying vice, tools, and materials to someone who needed it and couldn't afford it. Such stories appear on roff every year. Roff is a generous place, but it will not tolerate pompous, pontificating fools who answer a question with 15 posts and give no more info that a google site. The roffians that I know and love give advice from their heart and have learned the answer to the question by experience. The OP has not been around to see Connor's behavior over the years as we have. He has left roff in a snit more times than we can remember, always because someone disagreed with him and he wasn't "appriciated" for his "knowledge". Horse puckies! There are people on roff who have forgotten more than he will ever know. Sorry you don't live in the States. If you did you could attend a clave and see how much people help each other. Yes, there are difference, but that is what makes this place so interesting. Go to a moderated fly fishing site and it becomes boring. Roff is the front porch of a fishing camp where we all sit and discuss things (very heated at times, so invest in some flame proof clothes). Arguments? ****ing contests? You betchum. Fights? Oh, yeah... some big ones. But if the place is so bad, why do you hang around here? And why do the pontificating fools hang around here if they get grief and no appreciation? Hmmmm? Dave |

If you've ever been in Belfast, or Bosnia, or Kabul, you'll have heard the Ulster Protestants/Serbs/Taliban telling you that their particular patch is 'a generous place', and that they're the kindest, decentest people in the world. It's just that people DON'T UNDERSTAND them. Sorry you don't live in the States. That says it all. Lazarus |

Dave You canīt even read properly Davie boy, or keep two posts or posters apart. The guy I sent the reel, lines, and shooting heads to, lives in central Illinois. Last time I heard, that was still in the States. Nevere know with you buggers, no consistency, always staring wars,or seceding, or something. You canīt forget what you never learned Davie boy, and with only a few exceptions, there are not very many really knowledgeable fly anglers here. There are a few who like to think they are. MC |

I realize I was trying the "Don Quixote" here by suggesting folks tone down a bit. You are 100% correct though, with the advice to talk to local fishermen. I have done that and everyone has been great & I have learned a lot from them. But I've learned a lot from folks here on the board too -- if you can wade through the nasty posts and pick out the good stuff. |
