TFO Warranty/Service Kudos

Over the summer, I, being an idiot, broke the tip of my TFO 8-wt while
stringing it up in anticipation of the morning pike bite. Being a
procrastinator, I figured I'd "get around to" sending it to Texas for
repair. As I have a trip coming up, I sprang into action and sent the rod,
along with the requisite 25 bucks off for repair. Being a cheap bastid, I
sent it USPS, 9th class I think. Five days later, the rod arrives at my door
ready to go.

Considering the holidaze and general lunacy this time of the year, I'd say
that's pretty darned good.

How do you break a tip by stringing up a rod? You must have been
excited. :-)

I've broken one rod tip, on my favorite rod. I lowered the top on my
popup camper onto it, at Kelly Creek. There were ROFF witnesses.

Fortunately, it came with a spare tip. God help me when that breaks. No
warranty.

By "popup camper" do you mean one of the ones that fits into a truck bed and
cranks up with tent-like center sections into a cab-over unit, but folds
down to have little wind resistence?

I've been toying with the idea of getting one of same. There are times
when I'm too old, tired, and spoiled to tent camp and, yet, don't feel like
pulling the trailer. If that is what you have ... reviews?

Right. It's a sweet rig. The worst drawback w.r.t. a conventional camper
is lack of convenient storage.

It sleeps three people comfortably, as long as at least two of them are
intimate. :-)

On a short-bed pickup with load levelers you can drive on really ****ty
roads.

It has a two-burner stovetop, a furnace (indispensable), a water heater,
a refrigerator that works on AC, DC, or gas, and an outdoor shower. No
toilet.

What brand? I have a Palomino RV Bronco-800 and we love it. Does not have
the water heater. The bigger model does have the water heater. Porta
pottie and I hang the rods from the ceiling. Queen bed. Weight is about
1200#. Queen size bed. Short bed where the table mounts if needed.
Double burner stove, but we cook outside under the awning (great addition)
to prevent smells in the camper. We do heat water inside. Decent storage
under the bed (3.5" tall) for extra food, plates, etc. We used it last year
to drive to Alaska and only used hotels 2 nights in 7 weeks. Nice thing
about the B-800 is it has a full size door. Like a dutch door. Most have a
short door. So in law has a Fourwheel popup and is lighter weight. He
likes it but his is the Tacoma size and would like bigger. Is on a short
bed Crew cab diesel. Takes about 5 minutes to setup and maybe 10 minutes to
fold up.

What brand?

Northstar.

I have a Palomino RV Bronco-800 and we love it. Does not have
the water heater. The bigger model does have the water heater.

You can get by without a water heater. The furnace is a must-have.

Well... Imagine the scene: Early August, northern Minnesota, somewhere
around 4:30 AM, full moon. On the "casting platform" of my 30 year old POS
14-ft bass boat (starts every time). I'm meandering very slowly (trolling
motor) down the weed-filled river into pike land. I take advantage of the 10
minute trip to string up the rod. The reel end of the rod is on the actual
floor of the boat. With the reel between a seat and the "platform." I'm
about 1.5 feet above it. I'm threading the yellow line thru the last few
guides when I hear a fish jump. I turn, dropping George's Dahlberg Diver on
the floor. I bend down to pick up the wonderfully-spun bug and forget that
I'm holding the rod tip in my hand (see "I'm an idiot" comment in original
post). Snap. Broke it about 7 or 8 inches below the tip.

A slow and much more careful stringing of the 7-wt soon follwed. Quite a few
pike fell to that Dahlberg....

Well.....

Another scene.... go out with family (10 people on three boats) to middle of
lake. Tie floaty raft things to boat. Enjoy the sun. Play in the water. Get
dragged around on a tube by FIL's fast boat. Laugh. Consume many cocktails.
Forget about rope with which you attached floaty raft things to boat. Later,
wonder why the boat won't go into gear.
