From the AP link at the NY Times:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- The nation's first genetically altered household pet -- a fish that glows in the dark -- is set to begin appearing in stores next month everywhere except perhaps California, the only state with a ban on lab-engineered species. On Wednesday, the California Fish and Game Commission is scheduled to take up an application from Yorktown Technologies of Austin, Texas, to market the GloFish in California. How long before these show up in Bait Shops?? Scott |

Kind of like the whet squirrels we had in our neighborhood a few years ago - the hawks made short work on them when spring hit. I can imagine one of them sitting up in the branches thinking he was invisible, and then *swoop*! |

There are a number of "designer" fishes out there now. "Designer" Atlantic Salmon have been submitted to the FDA for approval. The company that developed them has standing orders for The Atlantic Salmon have gotten most of the press but there are over 35 different "species" being developed. There are engineered carp and tipalia that have been developed and are in production in China and Cuba. http://www.ems.org/salmon/genetically_engineered.html http://www.commondreams.org/headlines/050100-01.htm http://www.mindfully.org/Water/2003/...ial15jun03.htm http://www.afprotein.com/bounty.htm http://www.growfish.com.au/content.asp?contentid=468 Maybe one of our New Zealand posters could comment on: http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/SC0311/S00100.htm Interesting stuff!
