Friday: too damn cold, Owens river not putting out.
Saturday: Driftboat on the Owens (7 mile drift in 1.25 straight line distance in Bishop), partner lands many fish, I don't land one. I hook one "Alper" (term for an Alper Ranch-raised stocky. Average 2-3 lb., some to 8 lb.) that breaks the hook on a #8 Hornberg. Partner laughs at me. Is getting fly mounted. Laughs again. "Because I'm your friend, when you fall on your face, I'll be there to laugh at your silly ass." This from a guy that has no compucntion against putting a treble hook and Velvetta on the end of his fly line. Life is cruel. Gary Brock of Brocks Fly Fishing is an excellent guide. Sunday: San Gabriel River - Raining. No fish moving. Best thing about California: Baja-style Mexican food (taquitos, chimi w/ 1 1/2 lbs of stripped beef, Spanish rice, frijoles, guac, dos equis $8.50 Amerikun) Worst thing about California: They've cornered the market on good Mexican food and won't let it out of state. -- Frank Reid Reverse email to reply |

The gentleman I was fishing with landed *many* more fish than I did, and this was despite his giving me the prime casting spots. Aaarrrgghh! (But thanks, Danl). And I second your opinion about Gary being a good guide. Don't you see? We're going to license the stuff to the other states and close the budget deficit that way. And people say we're screwballs... Anyway, I hope your trip was a good one, and come again in a warmer month when you can get into the Sierra high country to chase goldens! Cheers, Bill |

And I second your opinion about Gary being a good guide. I first put a fly rod in this guy's hand. Thats gratitude for ya. By the way, Gary had a orthotic boot on his foot recovering from an injury. Didn't slow him down from dancing all over the boat. Worst thing about California: They've cornered the market on good Mexican food and won't let it out of state. Don't you see? Found out that the best dinner in Bishop is at the bowling ally, $11.95 for awesome prime rib and hamburgers that are out of this world. -- Frank Reid Reverse email to reply |

BTW, the bowling alley is about 27 feet from the fleabag hotel where we stay in Bishop. Danl |

The 60 plus year old lady at the hotel desk took one look at us and asked "King or two Queens?" Politically correct? I don't think so. Frank |

I'd rather sit in the hotel room with a carne asada burrito, a quesadilla, and kerosene hot sauce with a side of picadillo than go out to eat. Top it off with a Corona, a shot of Cuervo and a good ball game on the TV and heaven is near. Welcome back, Frank. Sunday: San Gabriel River - Raining. No fish moving.
I was about to head up there myself on Sunday were it not for the rain. Yeh, we had a mad dash down 14 to get there and hoped that something would be around. Nothing, nada, didn't see a fish (which in that skinny water shouldn't be so difficult). It was, however, a pretty hike and a really nice walk. My friend normally uses a mountain bike to go up there and I can see where that would be nice (as opposed to our six mile hike). -- Frank Reid Reverse email to reply |
