The last time the humidor starting looking empty I logged
on to buy my usual cigars from the usual source. I enjoy a Cohiba Secreto in the evenings after dinner. Sweet holy moley in a rickshaw, Batman !! I got a serious dose of sticker shock, we're talking sticker shock out the ying yang. Well, actually it's exchange rate shock but whatever, I am not paying that much for cigars. No friggin' way. So I bought a few sticks from my local tobacconist to see if I could find a reasonably palatable alternative. And I did. Finally. The La Riqueza No. 5 from Pete Johnson's Tatuaje is a Petit Corona like the Cohiba Secreto and it's a decent enough half hour smoke that I can buy without taking out a second mortgage. The Secreto has a Maduro wrapper and the binder & filler are Cuban while the No. 5 is Nicaraguan wrapped in Connecticut Broadleaf but they're amazingly similar and until the dollar climbs out of the toilet I'll be smoking the No. 5s. If you like to put a small stick in your vest for a quick half hour smoke astream you could do worse than the La Riqueza No. 5. -- Ken Fortenberry |

Not the world's best cigar or anything like that, but a decent smoke for about $6USD. Also, if you can find them (I have no idea what they go for now if you find them), the CAO Anniversary is pretty good Maduro Corona, as the CAO Corona for about $5USD. TC, R |

Ditto Tim's aversion to Thompson's, and with a plug for your local shop. We've all seen the trend in fly fishing as small local shops succumb to the mega box sporting goods stores and online shopping; and with that loss, we lose a wonderful thing. Maybe it's different nowadays, and maybe I'm overly nostalgic for the paradigms of my younger days; but damnit, I love small fly shops. When my favorite local place went out of business, it was a mournful loss. Your local tobacconist is no different. The sights, the characters, and oh yeah, the aroma of a decent tobacco shop is something I'd like to remain through the growth of internet commerce. I actually started smoking a pipe years ago just so I'd have an excuse to go into tobacco shops. I like walk-in humidors, hand carved pipes in glass cases, a counter top of glass vials full of tobacco blends, a friendly shop owner who can help you with your choice. Just a few days ago, I was in my local shop buying a few stogies for my Salmon River trip, and noticed that many of the brands with which I was familiar were absent from his humidor. No Fuentes, no Macanudos, no Montecristos, no Dunhills. I asked why there were so many unfamiliar brands, and he said he couldn't compete with the online retailers for brands like Macanudo. He did point me to a few he thought I'd like, and he was right. I'd hate to see places like that go by the internet wayside, so if you have a local tobacconist, I encourage you to patronize him. The aroma of your computer monitor just isn't the same. Joe F. |

I buy a lot of singles, variety being the spice of life and all. But I've also found that the local shops come pretty darn close to the mega-stores on box purchases by the time you add the shipping. Also, the local guy will let me store my stuff in his humi until I'm ready for it, which allows the cigars to rest a while in the right conditions while I make room at my place. I'd sure like it if *someone* who really knew woodworking would make me a nice spanish cedar cabinet, but the librarian bros probably won't even take the hint. ;-) If you haven't yet tried one, I highly recommend the Alec Bradley Tempus. I don't normally like AB's, but this one is very tasty. The local guy turned me on to one, and I went back for more this week. -- TL, Tim ------------------------- http://css.sbcma.com/timj |

Not sure if my woodworking skills are up to making something airtight. Maybe Claspy can help you. :-) Seriously, what sort of design did you have in mind? Chuck Vance |

I've a supply of Fundadores - yes, they are what you might guess - let's just say they are, um, not of a current production...and IIRC, Ken had either one of those or maybe a vintage RyJ when last we were together, so I've no doubt that Ken has lived, see-gar-wise...
