Big Y Fly Co, yeah or nay?

I have tried them a couple of times and was wondering what people
thought of their quality?

Their prices are awesome, about $.52 for a beadhead nymph, and $1 for a
steelhead fly.

My experience with the quality has been between OK and awful. trout
sized PTs are tied decently, but I have had problems with hooks
breaking, especially on prince nymphs. Alot of hooks breaking! And I
got caddis poopah that had the chenile tied down with thread instead of
wire. That is really bad, but in all fairness that was the only
experience I have had with grossly negligent fly's.

On a positive note, they give you something like a %10 credit on what
you order, that you can use on future purchases, and if you buy
something like $35 worth of flies the shipping is free.

What have other people's experience been with the quality of the fly's?

You probably wouldnt want to use them for fishing trophy fish in Alaska,
but when you live right on a stream the price is definitely right.
Quality? Between horrible (only on one occassion) to not so good (you
notice certain flies hook will break off more easily) to ok (the hooks
dont break and the flies are tied right.

Maybe the flies I got were from a bad batch of hooks? What has other
people's experience been with them?

Based on your experience, I wouldn't even consider buying from them.
"OK to awful" isn't the range of quality I generally look for. Hell,
if the hook's going to break, I don't care if they only cost $.10
each. Shoot, Walt will tie one on for you for free, and you'll catch
just as many fish.

flydealflies.com out of China Maine 50 cent flies guaranteed smallish
hooks if you want a 16 order a 14 thats what I do for Penns though
Penns have bigger bugs than say here in ct but if you send him a
pattern he will tie it up for ya...... Minimum of 5 dozen flies per
order...........

Well I live on the upper sac, so I fish all the time and flies are
expensive. Like I said, if I were to go steelhead fishing or something
I wouldnt use these flies. Plus, maybe I just got a bad batch which
could happen to Umpqua or whoever the highest quality flies are?

In this case, there is no definition of a 'bad batch' of flies. There
are dozens (hundreds?) of tyers, tying hundreds of types of flies in
hundreds of patterns, that go into hundreds of bins to be distributed
to thousands of dealers in dozens of countries all over the world, and
get mixed in with hundreds and hundreds of other flies.

So you order a mix of flies in a limited range of styles, sizes and
colors. The odds of you selecting a 'batch' with a single similar set
of characterisics (weak hook, poorly tied, etc) that was statistically
different from the entire monsterload of flies from the company is
microscopically small. Whatever characteristics your set of flies
shows is almost certainly representative of any mix of flies someone
would order from that company.

Ditch them. I recommend Troutflies.com

I understand a desire for economy, but if half the hooks break, each
functional fly actually costs twice the unit price, not counting the
frustration of losing fish you've worked hard to hook. You'd do
better to pay twice as much for hooks that don't break. I have to
assume that if you're breaking hooks that the flies do actually
attract fish, so that's a plus at least.

Never had a problem with Bigy, but I mostly use Theflystop.com now.
Great selection, great prices. Occasional hook failures, but mostly on
8 lb. or heavier fish on size 16 nymphs. Most nymphs 50 or 60 cents.
