What's happening here? (Sandsfoot Castle area)

Nobody talk fishing anymore or has everyone gone over to the multitude
of forums around nowadays?
All the threads are crap!
Anyway I am off to Weymouth on Tuesday and am staying near Sandsfoot
Castle in Portland Harbour, ( that is, Old Castle Road).
Anyone fish the area or is it going to be Chesil Beach.
Advice would be appreciated,

This year has started slowly. Everything is about a month behind - more
like the old days. So: About now the bass are just starting to come close
inshore. My first decent bass of the year usually comes from the
Ringstead/Osmingtom area or - wait for it - the north shore of Portland
Harbour - ie, right where you're staying.

Bring spinning/plugging gear and a fly rod.

You won't get as many bass as you might in midsummer but you have a much
better chance of a decent fish.

Fish three short sessions a day: the very first light, over high tide and
the last of the dusk. Wade (wellies will do) the shore with 5" shallow
diving plugs, and bar spoons. Cast biggish (4"+) lures alongside any
features you find.

For a daylight change go to the Bill and floatfish for garfish and early
pollack. If we get some hot, sunny days try for a mullet in Weymouth
Harbour. If there's an absolute flat calm try deep wading along the western
shore of Portland Harbour with a fly for bass in the area now usually ruined
by the board sailors.

Don't bother with the Chesil. Fishing won't pick up there for another
month.

Right now I'm facing an 'orrible deadline but I hope to get out towards the
end of the week so I might see you down there ;-)

Derek, as usual excellent advice.
Had no luck from the beach in the harbour but found that the South Pier
at Weymouth was interesting. Used a lot by the local lads but the
mackerel were few and far between.
Nice Ballan(?) Wrasse though, and one of the guys must have had a good 2
pounder on Rag.
I think might have sussed out how to fish the harbour now, as on the
last day ,I float fished, (good old pike bung:-), rag at about 2 ft. One
bass, but too small to put in the pot :-(
A great time however and hope to get back down that way ASAP!

get down that way, (which would be soon, AND PERMANENT, if SWMBO can be
convinced :-)

I had one evening trip to the N shore while you were there - we should have
arranged some sort of contact system. Saw several bass at long range but
only landed small pollack. Also one trip to the Osmington shore for some
more pollack - all on 'flies' about 2" long and skinny, silver mylar bodies,

Tried a Kimmeridge trip but got up a bit late - got to the beach about

Once the water really warms and the prawns appear in the weed on the piles
try the same depth (with an avon) in the edges of the streetlight shadows
after dark.

A great time however and hope to get back down that way ASAP!

Ah, the hard part...

We've also seen a lot of mullet inshore all along the coast as far as
Kimmeridge but they're only feeding in short bursts atm, their guts are
probably too cold to digest regular meals as yet. They'll be hungry real
soon now.

This year has gone back to the old timings, we're no longer used to it -
last year I took my first bass in mid April - this year it looks like it'll
wind up about the second springs in June - but that won't stop me trying
next weekend; just in case.

If there's an complete collapsed calm try abysmal wading forth the western shore of Portland Harbour with a fly for bass in the breadth now usually ruined by the lath sailors.
