NC trout fishing

Hi. I recently went trout fishing with my girlfriend's uncle in
Missouri (Meramac Springs), and had a great time (caught one!). I
live in central NC, and would like to go trout fishing again, but
don't know where to go, what I need, etc. I'd just be driving around
in the mountains without a clue.
Could any old pro out there please give me some advice and help me get
started? I've wanted to fish for a long time...I just don't know
where to start. My dad didn't fish, so I really didn't "grow up with
it" so to speak. I'm an absolute beginner.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

First of all, welcome to the elite group of people who've been skunked - or
nearly so - in Missouri's trout parks where you can see more stocked fish in
an afternoon than Mrs Paul's sells in a year . . . Strange thing is that
neophytes usually catch more fish than experienced fly fishers. (That's the
exasperated voice of of experience.)

Second, you won't find any place in NC that's similar to Maramec Springs.
(Which flows into the Meramec river upstream from Maramac Spring State Park.
Missouri pioneers were spelling-challenged.) About the closest you can get
that I know of in NC is the streams on the Cherokee Indian Reservation.

Third, I'll second Wayne Harrison's advice about contacting the folks at
this shop: http://www.ezflyfish.com/

Fishing in Missouri was the first time I went, and I had a ball. I go

From where you live, to drive to the other side of the Smokies, either on
the north our south or most eastern side of the park, you pass wonderful
trout streams all the way.

don't forget to leave the place cleaner than you found it, catch and release
and if you do do drugs, bring enough for everybody....

Make sure that Walt sells you a copy of "North Carolina Trout Fishing
Maps Book"

Not sure where in central NC you are, but the East Prong up at Stone
Mtn. is C&R till June 1. Pan Fish and Bass in lakes and ponds. Small
Mouth in rivers.
