An as yet undetermined number of ROFFians and others will be gathering
together next Saturday, 4-24-04 near Avalanche in Vernon county, WI to pursue the wily trout. So far, it's me and Joel for sure and several maybes. Anyone wishing to join us is welcome. We'll be meeting at a yet to be agreed upon time at the West Fork Sportsmen's Club facilities located on the banks of the west fork of the Kickapoo river, on county highway S about a quarter mile south of the junction with county highway SY (Avalanche Road). Latitude: N43° 35.8783' Longitude: W90° 46.7284' (according to DeLorme Street Atlas) The WFSC grounds are available for camping only to members. Memberships may be bought at the store in Avalanche. Annual fee is something like $10. Camping costs $8 per night. Other amenities are available nearby in Viroqua and Westby. There are lots of good trout streams in the area, the west fork of the Kickapoo and Timber Coulee notable among them. Herculean efforts by various conservation organizations on waters that were entirely written off as trout habitat by the Wisconsin Department of Natural resources a couple of decades ago have resulted in fisheries that hold an astounding number of fish (as high as 10,000 per mile in certain stretches of Timber Coulee by some reliable estimates!), a good few of which attain scary size. Public access is readily available on most sections, and both wading and bank fishing are relatively easy. Weather.com predicts partly cloudy with a high of 57 and a 20% chance of rain for Saturday. Anyone who plans to attend can show up wherever and whenever they wish but if you're interested in hooking up with the rest, please let me know by 8:00 p.m. on Friday so we can simonize our watches and all that happy ****. ![]() Wolfgang |
